Scholastic set is better

Scholastics "I can learn to read" is better. I have many early reading resources. We have the bob books all the way up to set 4. Teach your child to read in 100 lessons, we have the leapfrog letter factory, and misc. leveled readers like big egg. The best is the scholastic combined with the leapfrog videos. My 3 year old knows all the letters of the alphabet and all their sounds from the leapfrog videos. Now she is ready to start reading. The Bob books seemed good, but in retrospect and in comparison to scholastic they were too boring/ too hard. It turns out there are more skills to reading than simple phonics. There is using context cues, using the pictures, the child using their knowledge of grammar to guess the next word, in addition to phonics. The Bob books only use phonics, but the scholastic books use all the cues such that my 3 year old is actually reading. So now each night I tell them "I read a book, you read a book". And both my 3 year old and 5 year old are involved in that.

The Best Thing for my Four Year Old!

Bob Books! Who knew? My young daughter LOVES these books. She is 4 years old and came to me one day saying "I want to learn how to read by myself! My friends can read and I want to learn how to read." I remembered hearing other mothers refer to "Bob Books" long ago so I looked them up and purchased. WoW! My daughter thinks she is such an accomplished human being now, when she reads how "Mat sat." LOL.. I love it. It has been an amazing experience for my little one and her confidence. I'm so happy I bought this set and I will purchase more.

Perfect Addition to 100 Easy Lessons!

My son was a reluctant reader last year. It was our first year homeschooling and we were having a hard time finding a program that worked well for us. We started BOB Books this month when we started out new school year. We use Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons. I love the DIASTAR approach to reading. BOB Books go along nicely with 100 Easy Lessons. My son loves doing a few lessons and then being able to read a new book. I highly recommend BOB Books to anyone teaching their child to read even if they are using a different program as their primary.

Diversity rather than unity is taken to be the central theme, and for the first time in an introduction to pidgins and creoles, the Atlantic creoles receive the attention they deserve. Pidgins are not treated as necessarily an intermediate step on the way to creoles, but as linguistic entities in their own right with their own characteristics. In addition to pidgins, mixed languages are treated in a separate chapter.
Research on pidgin and creole languages during the past decade has yielded an abundance of uncovered material and new insights. This introduction, written jointly by the creolists of the University of Amsterdam, could not have been written without recourse to this new material.

She currently works as an editor in Toronto. Kerry Cathers is an avid lover of history and writing. She obtained her bachelors from the University of Toronto, where she found a particular affection for things medieval and European. Why didn't I get this sooner!?

As a new grad in the ICU I don't know what I would do without this book. This was recommend to me by my critical care guru, and I see why. It has the answer to (almost) every question I have in a compact format I can navigate quickly.

I only wish I had it during my last semester of my BSN program. Would have been really helpful studying for those killer critical care exams!

Other topics surveyed include the influence of tropical diseases in the history of the colonization of Africa, and the global death-toll taken by the so-called ‘Spanish’ influenza of 1918-9.

The authors show how successive eras have registered some progress against pestilence, even while also experiencing confrontation with new and often unforeseen threats. About the Author
The late Frederick Cartwright headed the Department of the History of Medicine at King's College Medical School, London.

Michael Biddiss is Emeritus Professor of History and former Dean of Letters and Social Sciences at The University of Reading. Each was President of the Faculty of the History of Medicine at the Society of Apothecaries of London, during 1980-1 and 1994-8 respectively.

A subtle account of disease and history

This book is a good overview of disease and history, with a particular emphasis on psychosomatic disease. In this respect it is written in a slightly different style to others in the genre which I have read, such as "Plagues and Peoples", "Man and Microbes", and "Disease" (Ridley), which focus more on physical aspects of disease. It also presents perhaps more of the alternative views and arguments than some of the others, such as the debate around the origin of syphilis, the possibility that sweating sickness evolved into influenza, political ideologies and racism around the concept of disease, and the importance of geography and psychosomatic disease has on history in general, is more emphasised. Perhaps the crux of the books argument is summarised on page 191 "we may state that all disease is to a greater or lesser degree psychosomatic".
Examples of disease and the psychological effect on individuals and history is detailed in stories such as: the suspicion that Ivan the Terrible suffered from cerebral syphilis (page 52), and also Henry the V111, Queen Victoria and haemiphilia-and the suggested links to the downfall of the Russian Monarchy, the influence of the Black Death on feudalism, and the rise of Christianity in the light of successive "incurable disease during the years which followed the life of Christ" (page 15). The history of the Napoleanic wars is argued to have been influenced as much by "General Typhus" as by "General Napoleon", and Napoleon is observed to suffer from several possible ailments-not described in former literature. Cholera and its influence on sanitary reform in the 1800s is discussed, malaria and yellow fever and the development of germ theory, the death of the poet Keats by TB, Middle age witch- hunts, dancing manias, Hitlers paranoia about diseased and "pure stock"-these are all discussed in the light of physical and psychosomatic disease, and the issues and political ideaologies that sometimes surrounds disease. Aids is ony briefly discussed towards the end.
What I liked most about this book is the growing recognition of psychosomatic effects on people and history, and some alternative arguments to history and disease in this context. It is also interesting to note how the idea of "disease" itself has infleunced history, to the wrath of God to the inferiority by geography or immune system familiarity. One thing is certain about disease, whether disorder of the body, or disorder of the mind, physical or psychological or both -it has played a larger role in history than has formerly been given credit.

Fine Summaries With A Dose Of Salt.

For a brief book 238 pages this was fairly well written. The reader should be cognizent that this came out in 1972. The authors premise that wars, plagues, and famines feed each other is certainly true. At times the author narrated these beliefs without going deep enough into the details of the "hows." But, he did demonstrate how Athens and Rome were weakened far more by disease than from invaders. I thought the first three chapters were the most convincing. 1-Disease in the anc. world, 2-the black death, 3-The mystery of syphilus. The last ch. Man made problems of the present and future jumped from one topic to the next. Yet, he pointed out problems that have actually come to fruition today. This book provides good food for thought.

There are much better books on the same subject

Instead of discussing the impact of disease on society and civilizations, Cartwright speculates about what specific the diseases were that have played an important role in history. This was frustrating, because at best it is pure speculation.
For example, Cartwright asks "Was it syphilis that made Ivan IV "Ivan the Terrible?" and "Did the Bubonic Plague hearld the beginning of the end of feudalism?" I find such questions moot and pointless. If you are interested in this sort of thing there are several books I recommend over this one. A good introduction is Plagues and Peoples; Alfred Crosby's The Forgotten Epidemic is also excellent (although it is about only a specific epidemic.)

Using the Tour of Duty credit I found him on IMDBPro. His filmograhy is a bit skimpy. I recommend watching or reading interviews with the writers of successful movies rather than paying too much attention to people who read some books and then declared themselves to be screenwriting gurus. Gurus usually offer some kind of cookie cutter structural method. The people who actually make movies talk mostly about story.

This book is meant to be basic. It's going through the basics of a genre. If you are expecting to learn structure you need to look for Syd Field "Screenplay." This for the writer who is looking to advance, not starting from scratch.

It's a good book, but it's a bit too basic and very repetitive. It doesn't go into full detail about how to construct action set-pieces or create real-life breathing worlds in the fantasy genre.

About the Author
Jerry Scutts has worked in the field of aviation publishing since the late 1960s, writing over 40 books that have covered a broad spectrum of subject matter ranging from US Navy floatplane fighters in World War 2 to the exploits of the USAF's Phantom IIs over Vietnam. His specialist areas are the Luftwaffe and the US Army Air Forces in World War 2, and he originally appeared on the Osprey list as long ago as 1977, when he wrote the second volume in the now much sought after Air Cam Air War series –- many of the jacket illustrations in this series were also painted by him. Jerry has been a regular contributor to Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces series since its inception in 1994.

GOOD START FOR THIS SERIES

This series began well with this book by Jerry Scutts. It is really difficult to cover in one short volume all the aces that flew P-51 with the Eight air Force in WW II, and Scutts tried to give the reader a general view of their tasks and accomplishments. THe appendix at the end is very valuable. Good work.

The making of England

With the main text being only 75 pages, this is a very short Very Short Introduction, but an excellent one nonetheless. It covers the years 450 to 1066, but with just a cursory glance at events before 600. It is fact-packed and readable, with good illustrations, including two very useful maps. You should certainly read Roman Britain: A Very Short Introduction before this, and ideally, The Celts: A very Short Introduction, before that. This particular book leaves the reader with a strong sense of how much the Anglo-Saxon age shaped England's landscape and culture. If you want a broad overview of British history, this may be all you need for this period. If you intend to delve deeper into the era, this is a great place to start.

A good overview - informative and accessible

I am a big fan of the idea behind the Very Short Introduction series, and the way in which they provide information in an easily accessible manner. John Blair's "The Anglo-Saxon Age", while not the best example in the series, is certainly up there.

The book is set out in roughly chronological fashion, tracing the political development of England from the earliest settlements in c.450 through to that famous date of English history, 1066. Where it becomes appropriate, Blair takes the opportunity to bring in developments in society, religious culture, and trade and the economy - and it must be said that this structure works very well. The book contains plenty of illustrations to give flavour to the information. There is a list of suggested further reading at the back, which is commendable, although it could be more extensive considering the size of the subject concerned. Similarly, although there are maps to provide context, just two isn't quite enough to show the complex political and territorial changes.

To cover the entire Anglo-Saxon period - a whole six centuries - in just 90 pages (only 75 of which are the main text) was always going to be a tall order. Compare this with "The Crusades: A Very Short Introduction", which weighs in at 150 pages, a better length which allows for a more in-depth study of the subject matter. As a result "The Anglo-Saxon Age" remains only an overview of the subject, although a very respectable one. It is more easily digestible and certainly less daunting than one of the standard histories, such as "Anglo-Saxon England" by Frank Stenton (although that might be more useful for a student of medieval history). It might be worth also considering James Campbell's "The Anglo-Saxons", or Michael Wood's "In Search of the Dark Ages" as good places to start.

At the price this book is being offered by Amazon, it is nonetheless a good buy for the casual reader or for someone encountering the Anglo-Sazon period for the first time. Recommended.

Handy brief guide

John Blair does something in this book that I had thought impossible: he handles over 600 years of history quickly and easily. Well under 100 pages, this book is not only "very short" but very understandable.

Blair begins with some background on Roman-occupied Britain, but the story begins in earnest with the Roman withdrawal and the invasions of the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes from mainland Europe. From there Blair describes the development of Anglo-Saxon government and culture, giving lots of time to the Viking invasions and English attempts to fight back.

Overall, this book is a very good, fast-paced (only 75 pages!) guide to the Anglo-Saxon age. Blair covers all the major topics and even has some time for cultural development, including describing the impact of the English outside of England. The book tends to focus more on the later Anglo-Saxon era, from Alfred the Great to the Norman conquest, but this is really more of a matter of how sparsely documented the early years of the period are.

Recommended to anyone hoping for a quick guide to Anglo-Saxon England.

Even more complicated

This is a well written book on an important topic. Arbesman swims against the tide of tech pundits who point to a glorious future of seamless technology which solves all our problems. He shows in detail how as technologies get more complicated they create complexity which is more and more beyond our ability to understand. We are headed to a future where bugs and glitches and crashes are inevitable and unpredictable. He says we need to look at technology like a biologist might look at an new animal species, the inner workings of which we cannot fully understand, but we need to learn to live with.

If there is a shortcoming to the book it is that I think he does not take the argument far enough. I run a cabinet shop in Toronto, and my experience is that with the advent of new technologies such as the internet, not only does the technology itself become more and more complex, but that everything becomes more complex.

Essentially what I do is cut particle board into rectangles, screw them into boxes, paint them, stand them up in people’s houses and put some doors on them. How simple is that? And yet with globalization of trade, the explosion of online information available to clients, and the market driven race to add ever expanding new features to all aspects of kitchen design and technology, my job seems to get more and more complex every day, in spite of my never ending efforts to standardize processes. Every week is some new combination of organic materials, high tech appliances, European hardware, Indian or African sculpture, high modernist design, and not uncommonly some features that defy the laws of physics. Add to that the usual budget constraints, time constraints and a list of stake holders that rivals a wedding and you get a process that is constantly pulling towards chaos. And as so many home reno show attest, kitchen renovations more often than not end in disaster.

Even if all my tech devices operate flawlessly (and they never do), I still find myself “outside the buble” on a regular basis. According to Arbesman this term is used to describe when a combat soldier becomes overwhelmed by the complexity of a situation and looses the ability to grasp what is going on around them. I found it interesting that he drew this analogy because I myself have found books on military tactics and logistics more helpful than most business books dealing with this sort of complexity. The best ones are the written by soldiers who have actually seen combat.

One of Arbesman’s suggestions that I found particularly interesting is the need for more “T” shaped thinkers. This is a person with an in depth knowledge of a particular field combined with a broad knowledge of many other fields. He suggests that every company should have some of these. My personal feeling is that everyone who wants to have a job in the future better pursue such an educational strategy.

In my own business to be a really good cabinet maker demands having an in depth knowledge of traditional cabinetry, and ability to work with computers and technology. But that is only part of the knowledge I use in a day. I am constantly forced to make complex economic trade offs, using concepts such as comparative advantage (should I sub this component out or make it myself). Cognitive science is also very useful, in assessing situations such as “can I reason with a client who is in a state of panic” (not at all uncommon). Sociology and ethnography are handy as many of my client’s decisions can only be understood in terms of complex social status relationships. And finally as a cabinet maker you need a strong background in geometry, design history and a good common sense knowledge of physics, chemistry, mechanics and electrical systems.

This is a lot for one person to learn, and in the twentieth century this issue was resolved by Fredrick Taylor by dividing up workers and managers. Workers had technical skills and did things, and managers had general knowledge and did the thinking. Workers got a technical education and managers got a university degree.

But in the twenty first century this Taylorist division of labour has become hopelessly cumbersome. With modern tools, once a decision has been made about how to solve a complex issue the technical execution is often almost instantaneous. With nail guns that can shoot hundreds of nails a minute a skilled artisan does not need a crew of hammer swingers any more. Writers and consultants don’t need typists, they just push ‘print’.

Every one I know in business says they are desperate to find workers with technical skills but who can also comprehend the big picture.
Not uncommonly these days you hear about people who get a university education and then end up going back to technical school to learn some kind of practical skill. This is often seen as some kind of failure of education. In fact, it may be the way of the future.

And a good knowledge of the science of complexity would also be strongly recommended. If you want to see how small changes in initial states lead to radically different outcomes (the butterfly effect) look no further than a construction site.

One of the most through provoking books I've read in years

I've read a lot of books on the relationship between technology and the complex nature of life in the first decades of the 21st century. None affected me more than Overcomplicated for two main reasons.

First, while other authors get at technology per se at least as well as Arbesman does, he nails the problems growing out of it on the head from the beginning of the book on. See, for example, this statement on p. 3: "Each of our actions has more unexpected ramifications than ever before, rippling not just to every corner of our infrastructure, but to every corner of the planet, and sometimes even beyond."

Second, he is one of the few authors to view our responses to complexity as kluges, an IT term used to describe Rube Goldberg like patches that work well enough but often cover over root causes of problems. As a political scientist that's what most public policy turns out to be rather than programs that actually solve a problem once and for all. If Arbesman is right, kluges are becoming harder and harder to avoid. Alas. Think about Obamacare or dealing with violent extremism or almost any other policy dilemma.

I think so much of Arbesman's book that I'm beginning the next edition of my comparative politics textbook with the quote I used above and revolving much of it around his notions of complexity and kluges.

And he's a biologist turned complexity scientist turned venture capitalist.

Errors, edge-cases, and evolution

In Chapter 1 Arbesman introduces us to the complex systems that rule the world today (and describes how complex differs from the colloquial term complicated). In Chapters 2-4 we are shown how kluges, quick fixes to a problem, add up over time to make a system almost impossible for a single person to understand.
