great series!

Great book! I love the level system that they are implementing in this series. I'm looking forward to the rest of the books. The only complaint is that some of the pictures are not distributed well as parts of pictures are cut off across two pages

Interesting Stories.

I am halfway through translating the first story of the book "Yamata No Orochi". This story of the dreaded 8 headed dragon is engaging and a fantastic example of classic Japanese Mythology. No translation is provided, but all kanji has furigana posted to the right. The sentence structure is simple but the stories are interesting. Perfect for a late elementary or early intermediate Japanese student to practice their reading skills.

There are not a lot of beginner Japanese primer's, but while this one does not provide the translations it is simple enough for the reader to look up the translations and continue with the story. Is there a better way to learn new vocabulary than through a story?

About the Author

William Strunk, Jr. first used his own book, The Elements of Style, in 1919 for his English 8 course at Cornell University. The book was published in 1935 by Oliver Strunk.

E. B. White was a student in Professor Strunk's class at Cornell, and used "the little book" for himself. Commissioned by Macmillan to revise Strunk's book, White edited the 1959 and 1972 editions of The Elements of Style.

I've read two different editions of this book - I borrowed the 6th? 7th? edition (the one with the blue cover that is expanded) and I own the 3rd edition (which is not expanded). Let me tell you, this slim book packs a powerful punch. I've always struggled with being concise in my writing, and this book is THE book to help you maximize your writing. It should be required in high schools everywhere.

Back when I worked for a newspaper, one of my editors was trying to get a review of mine on a particular page, which meant he needed to edit a little bit out ... he came back and told me - I couldn't edit your review. Every word was essential. - YES. Thank you, Strunk & White.

The only writing book my son ever needed

Nearly one hundred years old, this book was originally written by William Strunk, who was E.B White's former professor. E. B. White later wrote the last part of this mini-manual. As you may recall, White was the author of the classic, Stuart Little. To study this book is to learn from the masters. When I was homeschooling my oldest son during his early high school years, this was the only writing book that we used. The only other instruction I gave him was to correct the mistakes on the novels he was writing at the time. When it was time for him to take the SAT test, he received the highest possible score on the writing section, and he hadn't even completed the essay because he ran out of time. If a parent or teacher is knowledgeable enough about writing, this is really the only writing book a student will ever need. Whenever anyone asks me for a recommendation for a writing book, this is the one to which I refer them.

A Good Desk Reference if/when it might be needed...

If you paid attention in (and remember) high school English composition, don't pay more than a buck for this. But I should qualify that I'm a senior citizen with two bright kids who went through school in the late 1980s, and (I dare say) they weren't taught nearly as well as I was back in the '60s and early '70s. So take this review with a grain of salt.

I'm writing this review for the free Kindle version with tan and dark red cover (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005IT0V8O/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_0). This Kindle version has clickable linkage, the Table of Contents is simple and well constructed, and the book is loaded with examples, so it's good to have as a reference for those times when one gets stuck on a cumbersome sentence or an overused word or expression, for suggestions on resolving active/passive voice, and so forth. Beyond that, my best advice for anyone who's already well-versed in grammar and composition is this, from the book's Introductory section:

"... once past the essentials, students profit most by individual instructions based on the problems of their own work...".

In other words, don't expect this book to work miracles. It won't write your book, essay or user guide for you. But as my heading says, I do recommend "Elements" as a desk tool for getting past any nagging nuances/bad habits one may have as a writer, or for attacking specific issues as they arise.

Awesome Book on London Cemeteries

This is an outstanding book for someone who wants to visit London off of the "beaten path." It has descriptions of all the cemeteries in and around London along with who is buried in the cemeteries. What I found upon reading this book is that it offers very interesting historical perspectives, along with nice photographs. Architectural elements are also covered. If you plan on visiting cemeteries and have particular wishes/purposes (visiting historical figures/persons, studying funereal art and architecture etc.), reading this book will help you maximize your experience. Highgate (the large and famous one) is a very different place and experience than smaller and lesser known cemeteries, but all have a lot to offer.

It's a great way to spend Saturday afternoons reading and/or exploring.

The small size of this book makes it easy to carry around as you explore London's cemeteries. The author has a nice writing style; very informative and interesting. There are also some good photos, and pertinent information is well-presented. Not only is the book useful, but I learned a lot from reading it.

Very Good Intro Book to the Garments Business

I first reviewed it over Kindle Unlimited yest afternoon. Less than a day after, I gifted my son who has just started a garment business in the Philippines' Garments Capital in the province of Rizal with it. Very good book for both starters and budding experts in the business. Well-balanced depth and breadth. Thanks for offering it in Kindle version. It is tens of times cheaper than other books of similar topic coverage yet covers a lot of learnings on the trade.

The Historian's Wizard of Oz synthesizes four decades of scholarly interpretations of L. Frank Baum's classic children's novel as an allegory of the Gilded Age political economy and a comment on the gold standard. The heart of the book is an annotated version of The Wizard of Oz that highlights the possible political and monetary symbolism in the book by relating characters, settings, and incidents in it to the historical events and figures of the 1890s, the decade in which Baum wrote his story. Dighe simultaneously values the leading political interpretations of Oz as useful and creative teaching tools, and consolidates them in a sympathetic fashion; yet he rejects the commonly held, and by now well-debunked, view that those interpretations reflect Baum's likely motivations in writing the book. The result is a unique way for readers to acquaint themselves with a classic of children's literature that is a bit different and darker than the better-known film version.

Students of history and economics will find two great stories: the dramatic rise and fall of monetary populism and William Jennings Bryan and the original rendering of a childhood story that they know and love. This study draws on several worthy versions of the Oz-as-Populist-parable thesis, but it also separates the reading of Baum's book in this manner from Baum's original intentions. Despite an incongruence with Baum's intent, reading the story as a parable continues to provide a remarkable window into the historical events of the 1890s and, thus, constitutes a tremendous teaching tool for historians, economists, and political scientists. Dighe also includes a primer on gold, silver, and the American monetary system, as well as a brief history of the Populist movement.

About the Author

RANJIT S. DIGHE is Assistant Professor of Economics at the State University of New York at Oswego. His specialty is American macroeconomic history, and he has written extensively on American labor markets between the world wars.

Political and Financial Allegory in Baum's Classic.

This book is offered as a teaching tool on the history and economic issues of the 1890's.

Mr.Dighe chronicles the interpretations of "The Wizard of Oz" as imagery of politics and money by various writers starting with Henry Littlefield in 1964.

The author cautions that there are subtle differences between the movie and Mr. Baum's book. The color of Dorothy's shoes is one example.

Mr. Baum's political leanings are a relevant topic of this book. They are basically an unknown. Mr. Dighe suggests that Mr. Baum probably didn't intentionally write "The Wizard of Oz" as political/economic allegory. But the book fills that role surprisingly well!

The first chapter explains money and national finances in easy terms. Some of the subjects in that vein are; the gold standard, gold reserve, and fiat money. They are all efficiently defined.

The story of "The Wizard of Oz" is printed in this book accompanied by numerous footnotes that are educational and interesting. Those footnotes detail some of the interpretations from authors like Henry Littlefield, Hugh Rockoff, and Ranjit Dighe himself among others.

These interpretations are speculative, but some of them are glaringly obvious. The green in Oz's temple for the color of money is one.

He includes William Jennings Bryan's speech at the end of the book. I have mixed feelings on Mr. Bryan. While he advocated the federal income tax(I don't care for that)he has his spot in history that was well-earned by his presidential campaigns and eloquent speeches.

This book addresses a fascinating topic. The question of whether L.Frank Baum intended for his book to serve as an allegory for the politics of the 1890's is one that each reader will have to answer for themselves.

Excellent Classroom Source

Ranjit S. Dighe's coverage of Baum's Wizard of Oz as an allegory is well designed as a teaching source for Populism.

I found his chapter on the historical background of this period very helpful in understanding this complicated period. More importantly, the chapter that includes the original story with annotations that identify the symbolism is exactly what a researcher is looking for. References to Littlefield's interpretation and Bryan's "Cross of Gold" speech makes this book a complete source for introducing this parable to history or economic students.

Good background information

Great background on a subject that escapes most history textbooks. The author takes a "middle ground" and asserts that Baum is not really taking an active stance on the Gold/Silver standard, but merely using analogies from the political climate at the times. The theory makes sense, but a deep reading of the Wizard of Oz then seems to take on merely academic curiosity.

5 stars for the background of the story, but less 1 star for the seemingly academic (pointless??) analysis of this nice story as it relates to the Gold/Siver standard.

Of course, other writers have completely divergent opinions on Baum and his writings, so I would also get some books by those authors to even out the analysis a bit.

About the Author
Brenda Moore-McCann is a medical doctor who graduated from the National University of Ireland, University College Dublin in 1970. She was awarded a B.A. (Mod) (1996) in the History of Art and a Ph.D. (2002) by the University of Dublin, Trinity College. She held a Government of Ireland Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship from 2003-2005. She is an independent scholar, writer, critic and lecturer.
