About the Author
Bette Hirsch is Instructor of French at Cabrillo College, California. She holds a BA from the University of Rochester and an MA and PhD from Case Western Reserve University--both in French Literature. She is a member of the original group of instructors trained by ACTFL as Oral Proficiency trainers and then testers in 1982 and 1983, and has conducted proficiency and curriculum workshops in Australia, Canada, Finland, and Japan as well as in the US (in French and ESL).Bette has been President of the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (ADFL) and served on the Advisory Committee for Foreign Languages and Literatures of the Modern Language Association (MLA), acting as Chair in 1999 through 2000. She has served on the College Board's Foreign Language Advisory Committee and has been an Advanced Placement Reader for ETS. She helped write a Model Curriculum Guide for Secondary School Foreign Language Programs in California, and contributed to the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) standards project. Bette formed one of the first four model collaborative groups that evolved into the Academic Alliances project. She was a recipient of a French Government Bourse for summer study in Toulon, France in 2003. She currently is a member of the Community College Committee of the MLA.Publications include three textbooks, literary criticism, computer programs, monographs and articles. Her full biography is included in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Dictionary of International Biography, Who's Who in American Women, and Who's Who in American Education.

Chantal Peron Thompson is a native of Quimper, France. She graduated valedictorian from one of the largest high schools in France (le Lycee de Kerichen a Brest) and developed a love of writing under the spell of the wind-swept coast of Brittany. At age sixteen, she was National Champion of France in the long jump. She went on to attend the University of Rennes and came to the United States to perfect her English and attend graduate school. She ended up getting married and staying! She has been on the faculty at Brigham Young University since 1973 and has earned many teaching awards. The latest is a distinguished University Professorship (1998-2008). She founded the African Studies Program at Brigham Young University and has taken several groups of students to Senegal. She currently directs first-year French courses and trains and supervises a team of fifteen to eighteen student instructors each semester. Thompson is a certified ACTFL Tester and Trainer and conducts workshops worldwide on teaching and testing for proficiency. Her speaking engagements have included keynote addresses at major conferences from Salem, Oregon, to Bangkok, Thailand. She has also presented a series of ACTFL webinars (March-April 2011). Thompson is the primary author of MAIS OUI! a first-year French text (Houghton Mifflin/Cengage Learning 1996, 2000, 2004, 2009, 2012); ENSUITE, a second-year text (McGraw-Hill, 1989, 1993, 1998, 2003); and MOMENTS LITTÉRAIRES, a literary anthology for intermediate-level courses (Heinle/Cengage Learning, 1992, 2006).

I had to use this book for my intermediate college French class. I learned a lot about all the great French writers and poets.
Had a great teacher who made it even more enjoyable. Some things are not easy reading, but it's worth the effort. Since most of the readings are short, it provides a good introduction to French literature.

15 wonderful Christmas stocking projects

I LOVE CHRISTMAS! This book gives me 15 reasons to celebrate the season. There are dogs, cats, snowmen, forest animals, Christmas globes, Santas, sledding, Vintage, toys, Noah's ark, bears and, of course, the Nativity for the themes.

Each pattern is two pages so seeing the counted cross stitch graph is not too hard. A color photo accompanies each project. All you have to do to get the template for the stocking itself is enlarge one of the color photos 169%. A copy store can help with this. There are two pages of general instruction that show what the symbols mean and they also explain how to create each stitch.

My only problem was I didn't know which one to start with. Hopefully, you will be able to choose one! My needle and I will be working into the night on these wonderful projects.

Lovely book for cross stitch Xmas stockings

This cross stitch book is very nice and has easy to understand color instructions. My only disappointment is that since I could not see inside at all the available patterns to make, this book did not have what I personally was looking for. There are mostly snowy winter scenes; not quite appropriate for a child's Christmas stocking in sunny CA where the winter is only about 50 degrees, and snow an extreme rarity! This in no way should deter you from a purchase, as the designs are very beautiful, and the print is large enough to use during your project. Some very nice teen or adult patterns in here also.

About the Author

Very comprehensive

This is a very comprehensive textbook for varieties of must-learn empirical strategies including discrete choice models and sample selection models. The author explains carefully most of the derivations of the models and stated underlying philosophy and developments in the literature.
While the book is still worth reading students will need to have other books to do modern econometric analysis in this fields. Train's "Descrete choice methods with simulation" and Gouri�roux and Monfort's "Simulation-Based Econometric Methods" are examples.
Still, I love this book because I feel excitement of early-days econometricians who developed most of modern econometric frameworks when reading it.

Good, but are you REALLY sure you need this?

This book surely is a classic treatment of limited dependent variable models. However, I suspect most researchers, and definitely almost all graduate stduents will NOT need this book.

1) First, it is VERY outdated. Note that this book has been written in 1983. That is more than *20* years ago. There is nothing here on nonpametric and semiparametric models, which are becoming the standard in this field. For this, a good reference would be Pagan and Ullah, which also contain results for nonparametric and semiparametric general density and regression estimation. The fact that this book is outdated not only means that lots and lots of important tools are not covered here, but it also means that it covers many results and estimators that are no longer considered important.

2) Second, and especially if you are a graduate student, all or almost all the results you will need for your courses is covered very well in textbooks that also cover a wealth of other materials (such as Wooldridge, Amemiya, Ruud, Davidson and McKinnon etc.).

So, overall, do not buy this book simply because it's in your syllabus. Have a look at it first in a library, and then decide if you really need it. But chances are that you won't. The book still deserved 5 stars for what it meant when it was first published.

BREE LOEWEN has been a climbing ranger on Mount Rainier, an EMT in Seattle, and has written for Climbing magazine. She currently teaches rigging and navigation classes for search and rescue groups and lives in Carnation, Washington, with her husband and daughter.

There are people in this book you would never want to met

I started reading this book and it is a fast read. Chapter 1 is very interesting. There are lots of folks I would never want to meet. The authors climbing partner, Kim, the skier that takes the wands and ditches them, the authors boy friend that she says tried to kill her and I hate to say it I am not sure I would want to climb with the author. Chapter 1 reads like a how not to execute a winter climb and how not to pick a partner and how to ignore all the warning signs of an epic about to happen.

To me this book shows the real underbelly of climbing. The self centeredness that some climbers have and the attitude that the outdoors is just Disneyland with SAR teams.

The book is a real eye opener for anyone who has never climbed in this environment. The writing is OK but a bit bleak and negative. And the author seems to draw some of this negativity in people to her. This can make the book a bit uncomfortable to read.

The climbers themselves are a selfish lot and the tourists in the book range from selfish to suicidal. There are times in this book where you will have to wonder if Bree sometimes sets herself up for failure. If by nothing else never saying no. In the end I think the book reveals she is a good person. And that as climbers sometimes we need to look inwards and outwards. Inwards to our challenges and goals and outwards to insure we do not leave a wake of carnage in our paths.

So I give it a solid 3 might warrant a 4 but certainly not a 5.

Memoirs of a cold, tired, hungry and ill-clad climbing ranger with crummy bosses

If you've ever wanted to be a climbing ranger, or wondered what they do, this short book will tell you. I'll warn you in advance: it's not glamorous. In fact, it's often dreary in Loewen's telling - - lots of very cold hikes without water, food, the right clothing or the right equipment.

As that suggests, the book is full of moments when I thought, "Why did you make these choices?" For example, why did you leave base with too little water, too little food, too little clothing, an inadequate first aid kit, and so on? Often the answer is, "I expected an easy run up to Camp Muir," or "I only expected to have to guide a lost kid down the hill," but obviously life as a climbing ranger throws things at you. Constantly.

Most of the individual chapters didn't have the clear beginning-middle-end of a traditional story, built around a particular idea or point. (The story of the first body recovery did, though.) Many of them are in fact "all the stuff that happened in my really long day that covered 72 hours." There are interesting stories in there, but if I were Loewen's editor, I'd have had her break them up into many, shorter stories, each with a stronger narrative structure.

Behind the stories lies a very strong indictment of National Park Service personnel policies and management. Her bosses are macho jerks who don't know how to manage people. Some are enamored of uniforms and gun belts, others love enforcing regulations even when that enforcement gets in the way of the unit's mission. They expect rangers to work for free, without sleep. They worry about maintaining the NPS image even if that injures or kills visitors - or rangers. Appalling.

Lots of hard work

Clearly lots of hard work went into this book. Not just the writing, which is very good, but the adventures themselves. The job of a ranger always seems so glamorous, and the authors love of the work and the location really highlights those aspects of it. The author also does a fantastic job setting things straight with regards to long days and night and chores and the gruesome and grueling parts of the job. The adventures that are documented are fantastic and the descriptions really allow you to get into the events and begin to know the places and people.
