PETER MARREN is a prize-winning wildlife writer, journalist and authority on invertebrate folklore and names. He is the co-author with Richard Mabey of Bugs Britannica.

A delightful account of elusive and magical creatures

Peter Marren’s book is a very detailed account of the history and evolution of British butterflies interwoven with numerous references to writers, illustrators, scientists and hobbyists who have had a common fascination for them. The book is structured around thirteen chapters and an appendix. The appendix is a useful resource that lists British butterflies, from the common to the rare, and describes their respective characteristics.
The main thread is autobiographical, as the author shares with us the genesis of his fascination, as well as his final reflections on the future of butterflies and conservational challenges. The self-referential writing however does not preclude the book from being filled with fascinating historical figures, events and anecdotes, which paint a colorful account of these enchanted insects.
