About the Author
David Frawley (Vamadeva Shastri) is one of the few Westerners recognized in India as a Vedacharya or teacher of the ancient Vedic wisdom. He is the author of numerous books and articles on Vedic Topics including Ayurveda, Vedic Astrology,Vedanta, Hinduism, Yoga and Tantra, as well as translations and interpretations from the Vedas. Dr. Frawley has been given many awards for his work in India including the Veda Vyasa award by the International Institute of India Studies. He is a Jyotish Kovid through the Indian Council of Astrological Sciences, and is also the President of the American Council of Vedic Astrology, the American offshoot of the Indian council; He has a Doctor s degree in Chinese Medicine and has also been certified as an expert through the University of Poona for his knowledge of Yoga and Ayurveda. He is presently Director of the American Institute of Vedic Studies.

It's a short book, about 70 pages and the rest are appendices and resources. I'd say most of the contents in the book are readily available on the Internet if you look for it. I find most of the information written here are basic and especially the Part 1 where brief intros about yoga, ayurveda, and prana are discussed. I find them to be rudimentary especially for someone who's already familiar with yoga on a basic level. I got this book almost free except the shipping, otherwise I'd say it's not worth it. But if you're a total beginner in everything said here, and if you don't want to spend time look up online, then buy it.

Nice Overview of Bourdieu

While not always terribly kind to Pierre Bourdieu (okay, the truth is that this book erupts into scathing critique at some points!), this is a very readable overview of Bourdieu's main ideas and books. Jenkins sees tremendous value in the questions Bourdieu poses and in how he always theorizes from a point of view informed by field research, and in still trying to get a grasp of this French theorist's work, I found this book equally valuable to my own purposes.

About the Author
David Jenkins is Senior Lecturer in Economic History in the Department of Economics and Related Studies in the University of York, and Governor and Company Secretary of the Pasold Research Fund (that promotes research and publication in the history of textiles). He has lectured in Europe, the USA and Japan and published widely on the history of textiles in the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He has a special interest in the wool textile industry, where his major contribution is (with K. G. Ponting) The British Wool Textile Industry, 1880-1914.

A springboard for research

Out of all of the books on textiles, textile art, and textile history that I own, this is the reference that I use the most. Not only is it an excellent basic source, but it also has great bibliographical information which makes up for its shortcomings in other areas. Each section has its own bibliography, which is divided by articles, making it easy to find what you're looking for. It's a great starting point for research because of the quality of the information, the scope of coverage, and the references for more in-depth study. As a bonus, I find it also makes for fascinating pleasure reading, though I appreciate that this isn't everyone's idea of a Saturday afternoon well-spent.
