More than 5000 alphabetical entries include the people, places, items, and themes found in Arthurian literature written between the 6th and 19th centuries. The text goes beyond simple definitions, incorporating background on how individuals fit into a particular legend and/or their evolution as characters in the stories. Significant figures such as Guinevere and Merlin warrant several pages. While alternate spellings or names follow the main entries, they are not cross-referenced and there is no name index. A "Source Index" consists of an annotated listing of the hundreds of resources from which the editor drew his material. While some readers may find more detail here than they want, enthusiasts will find that they have tapped into a wellspring of information.

The legend of King Arthur and his knights and ladies has been around for more than a millennium. It probably began in the Dark Ages in Wales, as oral tales passed down through the years. Then it was picked up by the English, transmitted to Europe, and returned to England to be codified by Sir Thomas Malory. Meanwhile, Arthur had found a new best friend (Lancelot), a quest (the Holy Grail), and a place to live (Camelot). The Arthurian legend is best described as an amalgam of many writers' ideas, plots, themes, characters, and motifs.

To comb through 1,500 years of Arthuriana and find every name associated with it is a considerable task that Bruce has accomplished admirably. The extremely invaluable New Arthurian Encyclopedia (Garland, 1996) provides only 90 names (by design, it should be noted), whereas this volume has more than 5,600. It makes for both a fascinating read and a very useful reference tool. The work consists mostly of names of major and minor characters (Arthur, Gwythyr, Tristan, Petipace of Winchelsea), but there are also references to places, events, and things. The author has wisely made his cutoff with Tennyson's The Idylls of the King (1859^-1886) or the volume would be twice as long because of the current proliferation of Arthuriana. Each entry is listed alphabetically and depending on the subject can be very short or quite long. The entry on Arthur is nine pages long. It looks first at his historicity and how the legend around him developed. Then it notes what the texts say about the dates of his reign, how they portray his character, what insignia he carried, and where his grave is located. Entries are fully cross-referenced with the excellent appendix on sources that lists not only author, title, and date but provides brief descriptions, some keywords, and a note on the text that was used. This is a very useful work that most large public and academic libraries should have.

Christopher Bruce's encyclopaedic work is a magnificent compendium of all of the major 6th to 19th century Arthurian sources.
As a publisher of books and games based on the original Arthurian sources, I have turned to this book not as my 'Bible', but as a sort of 'Bible Concordance'. Which stories can I find Percival (or his many alternative names) occurring in?
I found this book to be worth ten, if not a hundred times its cover price in terms of compiling years of research into a single treasury of Arthurian knowledge.

As an avid Arthurian reader, I am amazed at the completeness of this wonderful reference. Nowhere have I ever seen such a valid and thorough resource. My son has loaned me his copy but I am looking forward to adding one of my own to my library. It is hard to believe that anyone could compile such a great volume so masterfully! Bravo, Mr. Bruce!

I was amazed to discover how young this first time author is. He has produced a profoundly complete and thoroughly researched scholarly work that is a "must read" for any student of the Aurthurian Legends. Mr. Bruce has researched even the most obscure references and stories of Arthur and the other characters associated with the legend. Thank you for your excellent work.

About the Author
Dave Knifton started his working life as an Aeronautical Engineer working in Spin Prevention for a Military Aircraft manufacturer. He then retrained to teach Physics in State Schools. After a number of years as Heads of Physics and Computing, he joined the newly formed Oracle UK. A few years later, he transferred to Oracle Australia to set up and run Oracle Education and then worked as a Principal Oracle Consultant for them. Leaving Oracle, he created and managed firstly an IT Consultancy in Sydney, and then three years later, a sister Consultancy in London. Dave has delivered consultancy across the globe and started various commercial Web ventures. He has also created two centres of Oracle excellence for clients in the UK and Eire. To fulfil a lifelong ambition, in early 2003, he converted a derelict pub in London into a caf� and managed this, before selling it at the end of the year. Over the years, both for Oracle, its education partners and through dozens of workshops organised through his own Consultancies, he has delivered education covering Business Analysis, Data Modelling and Relational System Design to thousands of students. He has authored two series of books on Data Architecture Fundamentals and Oracle Development Fundamentals. He currently works as a Consultant Enterprise Data Architect and lectures for Verhoef Training in the UK.

Best modeling book!

Only just came across this book! I have to confess I have been a data modeler previously, but never had a formal training in it. This book has helped me to get to grips with how to do it properly. It has given an insight into the smart ways to think and also a lot of detail around the processes that make it a lot easier. The templates are also very good and the Quality Assurance template is just awesome! I will definitely be using this.

These engrossing documents reveal the nuances of changing consciousness and show how it led to an autonomous women's movement.

Also explored are the relationships between feminist ideology and women's actual status--legal, social, and economic--during the century. Both bourgeois and working-class women are surveyed.

The book is beautifully put together, over 200 high quality color reproductions of works. There's a thoughtful essay for each artist represented in the book, and the opening essay by Helen Molesworth is very interesting as well. Definitely a great book for anyone interested in 1980s American art and politics.

Sean D. Murphy is Associate Professor of Law at the George Washington University. Before joining the Law School faculty in 1998, Professor Murphy served as legal counselor at the US Embassy in The Hague, arguing several cases before the International Court of Justice and representing the US government in matters before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and The Hague Conference on Private International Law. He also served as US agent to the Iran-US Claims Tribunal, arguing cases on behalf of the US government and providing advice to US nationals appearing before that tribunal. His publications include an article on international environmental liability which won the American Journal of International Law 1994 D ak Prize for best scholarship by a younger author. In addition, his book Humanitarian Intervention: The United Nations in an Evolving World Order won the American Society of International Law 1997 Certificate for Preeminent Contribution to Creative Scholarship. He is the author of United States Practice in International Law, Volume 1: 1999-2001.
