One would not normally expect students of biology to dissect frogs without prior knowledge of frog anatomy; yet students of history are regularly expected to analyse pre-modern institutions and events without any prior knowledge whatsoever of the general anatomy of pre-industrial societies. Gifted students will often acquire considerable knowledge of their particular areas - own individual frogs, so to speak - but the extent to which these conform to or depart from a common pattern remains unknown to them, a fact which seriously limits their capacity for interpretation.
What goes for students goes for non-academic readers too. They have at their disposal a mountain of historical works written at every conceivable level of popularization and specialization. But most of these works are devoted to specific historical phenomena, or at most to a comparison between two or three; and those which attempt more general surveys tend to be either inordinately long or else inordinately abstract. Where does one turn for a brief summary of the ground-rules? A bluffer's guide to the behaviour of pre-modern societies does not seem to be available.
What this book attempts is precisely that: to offer a bluffer's guide to the nature of pre-industrial societies, or more precisely to pre-industrial societies of the complex type (omitting primitive societies whose nature, again, is different). It sketches out the general anatomy of all such societies without attempting a full description of any one; and it is neither excessively long nor (it is hoped) excessively abstract. Armed with this book, the reader ought to find the specific cultures, societies, institutions and events of pre-industrial history considerable less puzzling than they are when approached directly.

I agree with the reader below. So I would only add some more recommendations to read: "The world economy. A millennial perspective" by Angus Maddison; "Power and privilege: A theory of social stratification" by Gerhard Emmanuel Lenski; "The History of Government" by S.E. Finer; "World History. A new perspective" by Clive Ponting; and "The Phenomenon of Religion", by Moojan Momen.

In a word "rubbish".

This book should be titled pre-industrial sedentary societies of medieval europe and the mediterranean. It lacks the scope of knowledge necessary to discuss all of pre-industrial history. The analysis of asia is so juvenile that it could have been written by a high schooler. The mish mash of ancient pre-modern and medieval history leaves the reader constantly lost and at times discredits the points the author is trying to make. The analogy of "the island" that is used throughout the book is distracting and poorly thought out. You can see the bias and prejudice that the author holds by calling all non-sedentary agricultural societies "Barbarians". The ignorance of the author is most clearly seen when the definition of capitalism is raised on page 166.
"An economy is described as capitalist when the following conditions are met. Everything can be bought and sold, including land and human labour. everything is a commodity as opposed to a means of subsistence."
By this definition there were no Capitalist societies until the slow dissolution of the gold standard in the 1900's. the author clearly knows nothing about the rise of capitalism that began with the champagne fairs. Nor has she researched about the difficulty that China had in industrialising due to geographic features and locations of their coal deposits. I would say the most egregious error is the complete absence of the impact that pastoral nomadic societies had in the development of the economics and politics of pre-industrial societies. Just one example without the nomads there would have been no movable type in Europe and thus no scientific or religious revolutions. The ancient pastoral nomads of the step did not simply "retard" or "disrupt" the rise of modernity; they were an integral part of its development. I would only recommend that this book be used as an example of how NOT to think about pre-industrial societies.

thought provoking

I have to disagree with the two reviewers. I found the book very useful.
When we think about the past, whether about our national heritage or about the historical past, we usually project onto it our contemporary assumptions about how things work. These assumptions spring from our experience of modernity--vast wealth; vast technological capabilities to shape our world; vast and pervasive power of the state; ample food supply being taken for granted, at least in the first world; 2% of the population involved in food production instead of upwards of 80%; an integrated culture such that farmers in remote corners of the country are watching the same movies and TV shows and listening to the same music as people in Manhattan; integrated economy, such that farms are no longer self supporting even in the realm of food production, but rather produce a single crop for market and buy their food at the grocery store like everyone else; social homogenization across vast spaces such that Californians, Floridians, and Mainers all think of themselves as Americans rather than identifying with the local culture.
When we try to imagine the world view and life world of people as close to us in time as Washington and Jefferson--let alone Alexander the Great, Muhammad, or Charlemagne--we have to think all of this away. This is very difficult because modernity seems as natural to us as the air we breathe. Crone's book is a very useful extended thought experiment that makes it possible to do just this. It is a bit polemical at times--but that is just Crone.
