This is a fun and easy read. The stories are hilarious. Steve Moysey writes clearly with wit, finesse and candor. I strongly recommend this book for anglophiles, lovers of the English language and anyone who enjoys a good laugh.

Very funny must read for travelers from and to the U.K. & U.S.

Steve has done a great job blending his witty humour and writing skills to create a very entertaining and in many ways useful guide to the nuances of U.K. and U.S. uses of the English language. As an American ex-pat my self, it certainly was a fun read that had me chuckling the entire time as he went into great detail of some rather embarrassing situations that anyone who has had such experiences will fully appreciate. Nice work Dr. Moysey. You did it again.

Steve Moysey is one funny author! This isn't his first book, but it is his first comedic book! In this book, he talks about moving from England to New England and the transition that he had to make between the cultures and languages.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a good laugh on the Brits and the New Englanders!

Dr. Ng earned his Ph.D in electrical engineering from Columbia University. Since 1980, he's been a technical manager with Agere Systems (formerly Bell Labs), in Murray Hill, N.J. (The book is published by Wiley Interscience [wiley.com], and is available wherever books of this ilk are sold).
The author is no slouch when it comes to technical publishing either. He's been editor of IEEE Electron Device Letters and is a liaison ot the IEEE Press, so it's a pretty good bet he knows what he's talking about.
Now, I don't know Dr. Ng personally, nor do I get any money for mentioning this book or any other. (I did get the book free to review, though!)

The book should not be considered a listing of current major semiconductor devices currently for sale. Instead, it describes the theory behind the major types of devices - like a floating gate MOSFET, LED, injection laser, phototransistor, MIM diode.

Also, it explains quantum tunnelling - Fowler-Nordheim and the use of the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation for the transmission coefficient. Tunnelling is used in various devices, and the understanding given here will be perfectly adequate for many researchers.

Only about 2 years of undergraduate physics is needed as preparation for the book. Plus some electrical engineering.

The text should be compared to the classic Sze tome, Physics of Semiconductor Devices.

Quite a bit deeper than I expected.

I'm sure the book is fine for it's intended audiance (Probably people with a Doctorate degree in robotics) but I was looking for something a little more on the practical side. So if your looking for something very deep and theoretical then this book is probably for you. If your looking for something practical that you can apply to building your robot then this is probably not for you.

WHY AREN'T YOU FAMOUS YET?

DUUDE...

So i'll admit, at first, i was a bit skeptical about starting this series for two reasons: 1) it was written by a nobody (no offense, name was just unheard of at the time) 2) thought it was going to be a story similar to the usual cliche of modern books like Twilight, Fifty shades,... etc..

BUUT! After reading Book 1. I absolutely fell in love with it. For months, i've been waiting until Book 2 finally came out. And i must say, i love it. The story. Your means of writing it, and how you wrote it, absolutely beautiful.

And to the author: Con.Template. If you are reading this, your talent of writing so many beautifully written stories are sooooo much more better than the authors of Twilight, Fifty... WHY AREN'T YOU FAMOUS YET IN THE MARKET?!?! YOU SHOULD BE B/C YOU SURE AS HELL DESERVE IT!

A Grand Book

The Visual Guide to the Clone Wars (based on the new animated film), is a remarkable book. Those who are familiar with the film, will find the book very easy to follow, and a delightful look into the film that goes at your pace.

The art is taken from the film, and 'panels' are inserted (and even numbered) so readers can follow the plot scene by scene. It's almost like this is a sophisticated storyboard for Clone Wars that took on a life of its' own. With the book, various elements in the film can be explained on a visual level, and inside jokes like 1138 can be got by savvy fans. (Think THX 1138).

Unlike many visual guides, this one weighs in at 144 pages of pure digital animation joy. Watching the film, I appreciated it, but missed some of the subtle plot nuances. This time, I got them.

The back of the book says it well. "A plan is only as goos as those who see it through". Perhaps this is a reference to the Scorcerors Apprentice, "Finish What you Start".

Either way, the Clone Wars rocks.

A home run for one five year-old!

A new Star Wars convert, my five year old son received this as a gift for his birthday two months ago. Since then, it has rarely left his side, as he reads it constantly. Although the vocabulary is often over his head, the graphics, layout and textual narration are excellent, and continue to command his attention and stimulate his imagination. Note: the book is strictly limited to the Star Wars Clone Wars saga (and graphics/illustrations from the movie/tv series, not any of the 6 SW movies). A very well-done product.

I am a huge fan of Star Wars and can't wait to see the movie The Clone Wars, so to get an idea of what it will be about I bought this book. It is awesome! It is jam packed with pictures and te,lls you every thing you need to know about the characters, battles, ships, everything!!! I think it is excellent buy.

Fascinating and well written

Deeply fascinating and a sweeping effort that keeps the reader interested and informed throughout. The samples, the graphs, the text all work well and you are never left confused or bored. I enjoyed this very much and read it cover-to-cover twice.

Superb

This book makes me wish there were a six star or that I'd never given a 5 star to any other product. Lumley goes into very good detail about how to calculate various aspects of engine performance. Then he gives simpler rules of thumb one can use instead. He'll commonly show how those rules of thumb compare to that empirical data both noting how well they compare but then show where they fall short.

This book seems as if it might belong in a sophmore class for engineers pursuing a degree related to automobile engine design or in an upper division class for engineers pursuing other lines of work. Just a superb book. I've flags marking equations on about every other page. His writing is clear, concise and simple. An example of the simple language which does not become simplistic is:

"When the flow velocity through an orifice reaches the local speed of sound, a change in the pressure downstream of the orifice can no longer be communicated to the flow upstream of the orifice."

I suspect that even graduate engine designers could use the equations in Lumley's book for estimation of performance. A designer of intake ports, for example, might use such empirical rules of an engine's "breathing" in order to sketch characteristics only turning to more detailed calculations and simulations when certain that a design fell within realistic bounds.

As a software engineer I find this book invaluable in creating the sort of basic simulation which is close enough without cutting corners too much. A simple example is the fact that the speed of sound only rises 1 meter/second from 0% to 100% humidity while a change in temperature has a broader range of change. To reduce the complexity of the calculations, he removes the consideration of of humidity. Even if travelling from a rain forest to a desert salt flat, the difference isn't worth considering except in the most rigorous calculations. The number and kine of examples like this are to numerous to consider in this short review.

Best as a textbook, but still interesting otherwise

This slim volume is for engineering students, complete with end-of-chapter problems, but is nonetheless readable, or at least skimmable, from cover to cover for those with an interest in engines. The writing is concise but not dry, with the author recounting his personal experiences with ruined VW engines. It has a sense of history, considering the 3.4L Jaguar engine first used in 1948 sufficiently modern to use as a benchmark to measure the late-Nineties Daihatsu against.
Some later sections run to several pages of calculations, so you won't read everything, but you'll still get a good qualitative understanding due to the author's own command of the subject.
