This is a good edition on good paper and with very good illustrations throughout.
It is worth the price for Part Two - The Post-Vedic History of the Soma Plant, by Wendy Doniger O'Flaherty.
What is the Soma of the Vedas? It is one of the world's great mysteries. This book is a detective story. It is very academic and well researched, but it is not boring. A great read.

This is the now classic attempt to identify the mysterious god / plant / substance of the Sanskrit Vedas as the fly agaric mushroom, a fungus known to have mood-altering hallucinogenic properties when properly prepared and consumed. Wasson argues that the cryptic descriptions of the Soma can be explained by the shape and colors of the mushroom, while its effects explain its association with divine powers, and its use in the sacrificial rituals to contact the gods. The conclusion has been widely accepted, and bitterly disputed, with a number of opponents returning, armed with new information, to earlier proposals.

The earlier views are the subject of a substantial section of this thick volume, a survey of the nineteenth and twentieth century literature by Wendy Doniger O'Flaherty, who is now writing as Wendy Doniger. In later writings, Doniger has supported more strongly Wasson's conclusion that Soma was originally a fungus, although admitting to some uncertainty as to which fungus, and to whether the sacred species might have shifted with time and availability. This survey is in itself a useful reference, and Doniger's translations of the some of the Rig-Veda Soma Hymns in her selection from "The Rig-Veda" for the Penguin Classics is a helpful companion as well.

(For the full set of such hymns, I know of only one English version, R.T.H. Griffith's aging complete translation of the Rig Veda -- second edition 1896 -- which, among other problems, accepted Max Mueller's identification of Soma with the Ephedra plant. The theory would make more sense if the species Mueller named was in fact the pharmacologically active Ma Huang variety, instead of just a relative.)

The whole issue is confused by difficulty of disentangling references to Soma as a ritual substance used in offerings to the Devas (the gods), as a substance the control of which was disputed by the Devas and their rivals the Asuras (roughly Titans, relatives and, mostly, enemies of the gods), and as a god itself, sometimes identical with the Moon. As such it forms a parallel to Agni, the fire-god, which is sometimes the actual sacrificial fire, sometimes an abstraction of it, and sometimes a deity with its own myths and cult.

Anyone interested in the subject of "entheogens" (a term coined after the appearance of Wasson's study, and in part as a response to it) should definitely read this book carefully, not least because it is so frequently quoted, quoted out of context, misquoted, and misrepresented -- and I am only talking about those who claim to agree with it.

So far as I am aware, there is still room for a major study, by someone other than an declared opponent of Wasson's thesis, of how closely the older Iranian material on "Haoma" (the expected, and documented, equivalent of the Sanskrit name) does or does not parallel the Vedic texts. It is possible, at least in theory, that more than one plant served the function, and received the name, in the period of Indo-Iranian linguistic unity. (The on-line "Electronic Journal of Vedic Studies" offered a series of articles on aspects of the problem in 2002-2003, which are available in pdf format; some fairly technical, but with up-to-date bibliograpy.)

I would add that while I sympathize with Wasson's endorsement of orthodox Hindu hostility toward alcohol, which already appears in the Vedic texts, it seems quite clear that fermented drinks also filled the ideological role of Soma in other Indo-European cultures. For example, a serious modern comparison of the Indra's theft or recovery of Soma from the Asuras, with the aid of, or in the shape of, an eagle, to Odin's theft of the Mead of Poetry from the Giants, in the form of an eagle, is greatly to be desired. Especially if it is undertaken by a scholar with a full command of the diverse versions of the myth in Indian literature, and an open approach to modern theories of mythic narrative.

Not what I expected

For a book that touts venison as one of the healthiest red meats, I thought it would have healthier recipes. Most of the recipes fit in the category of soup, stew, or casserole. And several list ingredients like prepackaged dry soup mix, refrigerator biscuits, bottled sauces/gravies, processed cheese, and pre mixed seasoning blends. This may be what some people are looking for. I am not interested in tainting my hard earned kill with processed off the shelf pre packaged junk food. Sadly I will keep looking for good, healthy, and tasty venison recipes. I give it 3 stars, because the author has taken the time to put together quite a bit of information, both for cooking and hunting. I also understand that many people are probably looking for these kind of "easy" recipes. I would like to find a book that celebrates the simple taste of the meat without smothering it in some kind of gravy or sauce.

great book!

I have tried a lot of the ground venison recipes and they all have been better than expected. The recipes have ways I would never think of to make venison taste great. I have tried other venison cookbooks and they just don't stack up to this one. I was not a big venison fan (didn't grow up eating it) but these recipes make venison taste really good.

She did not return to her family that night. In fact, she would not see her husband alive again. Instead, she was taken to prison where she endured six years of inhumane treatment. Soon Ok Lee learned that her "crime" was refusing to satisfy the greed of a government officer. While in prison, she witnessed the horrendous tortures and mass killings of Christians, and could not understand why they stubbornly refused to bend to the government's demands that they deny their faith. A must-read for anyone interested inside the North Korean prison system, and the modern day equivalent of the Holocaust.

Amazing and Informative

The purpose of this novel is not only to reveal the atrocities that occur in the prison camps in North Korea, but also to explain the mentality of the North Koreans that enforce these crimes.
The author explains that because all organized religion is banned in North Korea, the cult of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il takes the place of religion. The North Koreans have no concept of God, and instead, they worship a man and consider his state policies to be the divine word: "...Several books of anecdotes illustrating the infinite wisdom and love for the people of the Great Leader Comrade Kim Il Sung ... are like books of stories about Jesus ... Obviously it aims at binding the hearts of the people to their leader to obtain their unquestioning loyalty and obedience and unite them in a common faith. The quasi-religious element has been explicitly acknowledged."**
Soon Ok Lee's goal is not to explain her suffering in graphic detail, but to show what can happen in a society in which the morals of a mad-man are worshiped: Torture becomes acceptable, brutality becomes the norm, and no human life has value, except for those of the "Great Leader" and the "Dear Leader." Quick read; compelling (if exaggerated).

Since I've recently been very interested in North Korea I bought this book as part of my own informal research. It is a very fast read and is mostly a series of horrific anecdotes; it concludes with the author adopting Christianity (which somehow seems to provide divine justification and compensation in the author's eyes for her years of misery). I *DO* acknowledge and understand the very real and *incredible* suffering of 100,000's of North Korean prisoners but this book seems rife with what can only be characterized as exaggeration and embellishment. Situations that are described are often reduced to stereotypical morality plays: the author endures trials that would fell a titan, surviving them with horrible and permanent bodily injuries that frequently seem to vanish by the next chapter. She cites knocked out teeth, numerous experiences of being partially paralyzed and lamed by injurious punishments, and apparently countless episodes of being knocked unconscious, but seems to repeatedly recuperate totally. The book's pencil sketches of the author during her imprisonment generally portray a spry visage that is inconsistent with the text. I have NO doubts that countless innocent victims DO suffer and die in North Korean prisons but the cause of exposing this situation and bringing that government to justice is not promoted by embellishment that can't help but call into question the credibility of the underlying situation. I say as kindly as I can that I can't help but wonder if such exaggeration isn't somehow cultural -- the curious can find laughably extreme rhetoric in the stories posted by the offical North Korean news agency (...); their own words speak terrifying volumes. I generally liked this book, but the reader is advised to bring a skeptical eye for the author's specific tales while at the same time hopefully absorbing the underlying tragic saga that is today's North Korea.

A compelling read with a few shortcomings

This book offers a rare glimpse into the secret hell that is the North Korean prison system. The book is about a government worker named Soon Ok Lee who was arrested on false charges. She spent about a year at an interrogation center and another five years at a prison before being released early for being a model prisoner. She then escaped to China before finally landing at South Korea.

The book goes into great detail regarding the types of torture the guards practiced and the squalid "living" conditions of the camps. She also offers numerous accounts of how many prisoners were mistreated, sometimes so horribly that they died. This is all compelling to read.

The book doesn't waste much time getting into the main story, and it keeps your attention throughout the whole book. The book is only about 150 pages long with a few black and white sketches of some of the conditions and actions she observed in the prisons. This is what avid readers would call "a page-turner."

By the end of the book, I admired Ms. Lee for her courage and resolve and hope that by purchasing this book, I am able to aid in her mission of rescuing the North Korean people.

Having said all this, this book is not without flaws.

First of all, some of the chapters are notoriously short. Some are literally three or four pages long. Other chapters don't seem to fit with the rest of the book or may be better off being placed elsewhere. These short chapters disrupt the flow of the book.

Second, there is very little discussion of her escape with her son from North Korea. Perhaps Ms. Lee deliberately left this information out in order to protect the people who helped her defect. Little information is given about her life in China and how she had to avoid the North Korean police who were looking for her. This lack of information makes the final 30 pages or so of the book seem rushed.

On a related note, there was not much discussion of the culture shock she experienced when she arrived in South Korea. This was a missed opportunity to better understand the gulf that exists between North and South Koreans regarding technology and culture.

Also, even though the book contains a few illustrations, the images of Ms. Lee seem inconsistent with the text. In other words, there may be an image of a woman wearing normal clothes and shoes who is tied up while the text talks about having to wear nasty and tatteredclothes and being whipped and burned before being tied up. This is a bit distracting.

Finally, as has been noted in other reviews, this book was published by a Christian publishing company. That's fine. For readers who are interested in or concerned about this, the book does not really begin to reference God heavily until perhaps the final 40 pages. If you are a nonbeliever, you may find it a bit hokey that an "invisible hand" guided her to the address of an associate in China whom she had not contacted for more than 10 years. If you are a believer, you may totally understand this. My point in mentioning this is that the book seems to transition from primarily describing prison life to becoming a testimony of how a woman found God and how she wants to spread God's teachings to other North Koreans. This is not really a weakness of the book, but the book's title makes no references to this.

All in all, this is an interesting and important book. I wish it were a bit longer and went into a bit more detail, especially towards the end. But these are relatively minor issues. I strongly recommend this book, but I would advise people to monitor its price carefully. I purchased it new on Amazon for $10. At the time of this review, I see it being advertised for $35 new. At that price, I would not recommend it at all, especially given its lack of length.

“No topic in South Asian history has generated more controversy than the processes by which the British Raj was transformed into two (now three) mutually antagonistic successor-states. Ahmad set himself the task of trying to explain the circumstances that brought into being (against the backdrop of a faltering Raj and the triumphant progress of the Congress movement) a distinct Indo-Muslim sense of cultural self-consciousness and communal identity. His chosen method was not to cull the extensive primary sources (e.g. official records, private correspondence, etc.), but to offer a critique of the secondary literature (often highly contentious), and thereby find his way to his own interpretation. Because of Ahmad's untimely death during the 1986 Pam Am hijacking in Karachi, the present work is, in essence, his dissertation, which was seen through the press by his widow. The result is a stimulating, if idiosyncratic contribution to the debate. Graduate level.”–Choice

About the Author
SYED NESAR AHMAD taught in Pakistan, Canada, and the United States before receiving his doctoral degree in Sociology from SUNY, Binghamton. He was killed in a hijacking in Pakistan on September 5, 1986, while returning from the World Sociology Congress in New Delhi.
