Vintage but Still Current
By Bill Chambers
First published some twenty years ago, Bill Easum's Handbook is still highly practical and packed with pragmatic insights. The author's first hand experience as a pastor combined with a wealth of observations derived from serving several years as a consultant to a variety of church congregations make this an unusually rich and practical resource. The material is meaty, insightful and well organized. The writing style is engaging and filled with poignant, well selected illustrations that stimulate the mind and bring hope to the heart of any pastor who has struggled trying to lead a congregation to healthy growth. The chapters may be read sequentially or dipped into and cherry-picked as desired. I wish I had discovered this book several years ago at the beginning of my ministry. I plan to keep it on the shelf with my handful of frequently used references. Highly recommended.

An energy revolution is under way with far-reaching consequences for nations, companies, and the way we address climate change

Low oil prices are sending shockwaves through the global economy, and longtime industry observer Dieter Helm explains how this and other shifts are the harbingers of a coming energy revolution and how the fossil fuel age will come to an end. Surveying recent surges in technological innovations, Helm’s provocative new book documents how the global move toward the internet-of-things will inexorably reduce the demand for oil, gas, and renewables—and prove more effective than current efforts to avert climate change.

Oil companies and energy utilities must begin to adapt their existing business models or face future irrelevancy. Oil-exporting nations, particularly in the Middle East, will be negatively impacted, whereas the United States and European countries that are investing in new technologies may find themselves leaders in the geopolitical game. Timely and controversial, this book concludes by offering advice on what governments and businesses can and should do now to prepare for a radically different energy future.

Review
Dieter Helm has redefined the study of energy economics. His must-read new book is a prescient and gripping analysis of the trends which are reshaping our world - Edward Lucas, Senior Editor, The Economist (Edward Lucas)

“Getting serious about global warming will require a transformation in the world’s energy systems.  In this lucid and wide- ranging book Dieter Helm shows how that transformation will affect almost every quarter of the global economy—from commodity prices to the strategies of the world’s largest companies.  The future energy system, Helm says, is likely to hinge on electric power.  Today’s big producers of hydrocarbons, from Russia to the Persian Gulf, are in trouble; countries that can promote and harness technological innovation will fare best."   - David G. Victor, Professor at School of Global Policy and Strategy, UC San Diego and author of Global Warming Gridlock.
  (David G. Victor)

"Professor Helm is not someone to pull punches, and he certainly does not in this provocative book about the long-term demise he anticipates of the fossil fuel industries.  Whether he’s correct won’t be known for many decades, but in the meantime, his thesis and the evidence he assembles merit close and careful review.”
             - Robert N. Stavins,  Albert Pratt Professor of Business & Government, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University and Director of the Harvard     Environmental Economics Program (Robert N. Stavins)

"Helm argues convincingly and clearly that we have entered the endgame for fossil fuels. But, as he also makes clear,  how that endgame plays through is of fundamental importance not only to the future of our climate, but also to the structure of the world economy and its geo-politics. He is surely right that the key drivers of change will be technological advance and the strengthening of climate policies; and that , in the interim, gas will rise relative to other fossil fuels. This is an important book by one of the world's most knowledgeable and thoughtful energy economists."
- Nicholas Stern is professor of economics at the LSE, President of the British Academy and a cross-bench member of the House of Lords. (Lord Nicholas Stern)

?"When Britain's leading energy expert concludes that the fossil fuel industry is doomed, people are likely to sit up and take notice.  Dieter Helm provocatively sets out the primary causes - climate change and new technologies - along with the economic and geopolitical consequences of the endgame for fossil fuels.  This is no reason here for environmentalists to celebrate; even if investors follow a the "harvest and exit" strategy suggested by Helm, dangerous climate change is still likely without further action.  This striking new book displays Professor Helm's characteristic force and clarity, making it compelling reading for those interested in energy or climate policy."
                  - Cameron Hepburn, Professor of environmental economics at the University of Oxford
(Cameron Hepburn)

“The combined economic and political shocks since 2008 have had many of us squinting at the past to read the runes. The energy world is in revolution mode, with impacts that will reverberate through the century. Burn Out is one of the first to offer a big picture view of why, and how.”—Michael Grubb, Nature (Martin Rowson Nature 2017-03-03)

About the Author
Dieter Helm is fellow in economics, New College, Oxford. He is also professor of energy policy and professorial research fellow, Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, University of Oxford. He lives in Oxfordshire, UK.

Tell that to Ivan Glasenberg the brilliant CEO of super-trader Glencore
By Tony Meyer
There are several problems with this pompously written book. Mr Helm states it would be 'spurious to attempt to pick specific winners ...' but then says emphatically the commodity-super-cycle is over [SIC]. Really? Tell that to Ivan Glasenberg the brilliant CEO of super-trader Glencore. Then on page 225, Mr Helm explains 'the great trading bonanza is beginning a gradual tailing off'. Is that so? The Economist magazine reports in its Dec 10th/ 2016 issue that the commodity trader/ Glencore just signed a major marketing agreement to sell Russian oil. Incredibly on page 226, the book says [oil]-traders used to keep new entrants out [SIC]. So how on earth did Marc Rich & Phillip Brothers become the world's largest commodity traders in the first place- - when a decade before 1975, these oil-traders weren't even in the oil business to begin with? The conclusion sights prominent economist Robert J. Gordon who opines our best days are over. Really? Joel Mokyr, a prestigious and optimistic economist disagrees. There are too many mundane generalities in Mr Helm's book that are really predictions- - out twenty-five to thirty years. Also there are several inaccuracies in recounting the history of the fossil fuel business; i was looking forward to this study but was disappointed.

On fundamental future changes in energy, technology and geopolitics
By Amazon Customer
Highly recommended; a fascinating and inspiring book that reads more like an essay by Helm, Oxford energy Papst. This is a non-technical reading on the long-term development of our major technologies and energy sectors (incl. electricity/heating/transportation/manufacturing), and the geopolitical implications for the U.S., Europe, China, Russia, and the Middle East. Not flawless, e.g. it highly underestimates the fast advances in wind technologies, and belittles climate policies and fossil fuel divestment initiatives at the same time as he acknowledges how much the political climate "social license to operate" has already turned against fossil fuel companies. More serious scholarship and footnotes would be useful for future publications, but this one nevertheless is a very forward-thinking and policy-relevant perspective on major future changes.

Pictures of an Exhibitionist: From the Nice to Emerson Lake and Palmer - The True Story of the Man Who Changed the Sound of Rock, by Keith

Keyboard legend Keith Emerson is one of the most important figures to emerge from the thriving rock scene of the sixties and seventies. Fusing rock ‘n’ roll with classical, jazz, and world music, he has set a standard by which others are judged. With Greg Lake and Carl Palmer, he formed the hugely successful Emerson, Lake and Palmer, who, between 1970 and 1977, released six platinum albums. Now in this insightful and irreverent memoir, Emerson tells uproarious tales of life on the road, tales of the high lifestyle that goes with being a rock star, and of course, tales of the outrageous, barrier-shattering music he produced.

From Publishers Weekly
One expects a rock n’ roll memoir to be full of sound and fury, signifying nothing if not the inflamed passions, tortured egos, precipitous climb and calamitous descent of its subjects. Emerson, composer and keyboardist for the Nice and, later, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, gives readers all this: from flag-burnings to overeager groupies, from musical mishaps to drunken, drug-addled excesses, as well as a host of backstage celebrity interactions. (Mick Jagger, Jimi Hendrix, Rod Stewart and a wonderfully catty portrait of Leonard Bernstein as a supercilious old perv are just a few that dot the book’s landscape.) Wildly theatrical onstage, Emerson played Norman Bates to his organs and keyboards, hacking away at them with knives and swords, often leaving them ruined and smoldering in his wake. The problem is that, as narrator to his own life, Emerson seems too, well, nice to rev the engine needed to drive such a book properly. He pulls back when he should barrel full-speed, and his writing lacks the killer incisiveness of his keyboard play. Slow to start, often clumsily overwritten and self-serving, Emerson’s memoir shows little sense of the narrative arc of the author’s life, and so the book trudges on in a litany of events, happenings and episodes that ultimately don’t add up to more than a series of pictures at an exhibition. Emerson seems too self-absorbed to be an acute observer of others, neither does he appear reflective enough to cast light on the shadows of his own life. Fans of Emerson’s bands will relish the scenester details anyway, but others may find themselves wishing he could write with the same brilliant abandon that he applied to his music.

Title Says It All
By Mark D Burgh
Like the other reviewers here, I was and am a big ELP fan. As soon I heard Keith Emerson's playing, I was dumb-struck by his virtuosity and musical vision, one that, alas, did not play out too well over the years. I eagerly awaited this book, mainly because I wanted to hear what Keith Emerson had to say about his music.
There's a scene in "Spinal Tap" when David St. Hubbins is playing a beautiful piano piece and Rob Reiner asks him what the music is called . St. Hubbins replies "Lift my Love Pump." Well, I think that might sum up this book, and I can't say I wasn't warned by the title.
There are virtues here, however. Emerson has a breezy, conversational writing style that goes down easy, and he doesn't write a self-serving book in the least. The first part of the book, from his childhood to his breaking up the Nice is the best part, funny, and heartwarming. It struck me how much Emerson loved Lee Jackson and Brian Davidson, and the affection for his once and future bandmates mixed well with the stories. I often found myself laughing out loud.
The ELP and after sections are troubled. It's clear Emerson never liked Lake, and had a brotherly and patronizing attitude towards Palmer. But love between bandmates doesn't necessarily make great music, however, after reading this book and listening to the ELP oveure, I finally sensed the coldness that so many critics complained about.
The descent into drugs, the sadness of an abortion caused by miscommunication, the wrecking of Emerson's hand and the subsequent operations all make the second half of the book more than a bit sad. Emerson might have toned his words for this part of the book, but it continues in a breakneck and breezy manner, giving the impression (false I'm sure) that Emerson didn't care about these things.
My biggest complaint, however, is that he hardly discusses the music at all. I would have put up with hijinx and lines of coke with Bonzo better if he had talked about composing Tarkus more.
Still, for a proghead and synthfool like me, Pics of Ex is worth reading, even if the God of the Moog diminishes himself.

Two Thumb's Up!
By Doug Lundquist
Ok, so Keith Emerson is not the most highly polished writer in the cosmic universe. And sure, there are parts of his story which are sewn together rather disjointedly. Looking at it overall it seemed to me there were days where he wrote brilliantly and days where the results were average. I'm certainly no authority but I'm of the opinion if he could have gone back and revised the writing from those average days to the polished brilliance found elsewhere the results may have been a best seller. What you get is an honest and open account of one of the music world's great artist and performer's life. I've read other reviews that did not approve of all the road story details this book contains. Not me. When I read a biography about any person from any walk of life I want it all, real, and the way it truly was. Mr. Emerson guides you through it all with a revealing look behind the scenes of his professional and personal life, and yes, there are some interesting, startling, and amusing insights. If you're looking for behind the scenes Emerson, Lake, and Palmer info and dirt there's enough here to satisfy. He raises well found criticisms about Greg Lake's sometimes caustic behavior but then on the other hand he intimates how much of a truly good person Carl Palmer is. He also relates stories that could only originate from one of rock's elite members such as being on tour with Jimi Hendrix, and the Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett, his not so friendly rivalry with the band Yes, or motorcycling with Ringo Starr as a passenger. I am pleased to have read this and recommend you do the same.

Thoroughly enjoyable and pertinent account of Emerson's rise and heyday
By Stuart
Fans of ELP and Keith Emerson will definitely want to read this. A thoroughly engaging, often hilarious account of Emerson's success story from his humble beginnings, through his struggling years with early bands, on past his first major success with the Nice, beyond his wild days of stardom with ELP, and back to his ironically humble present-day existence as a struggling artist in L.A. I enjoyed hearing about Emerson's personal encounters with Jimi Hendrix, the members of Led Zeppelin, Ian Anderson, and other rock luminaries. Also described by Emerson, and previously unknown to me, is the intense rivalry that existed between a newly established keyboard icon Emerson and up-and-coming British keyboardists Rick Wakeman and Patrick Moraz. I would have also liked to know Emerson's "take" on other notable keyboardists of his era, especially Tony Banks and Elton John, and I would further have been interested in Emerson's reaction to copycat band Triumvirate, who themselves put out amazing music, but whose cuts on the Pompeii album sounded a little too close to "Trilogy," "Third Impression," etc. Quite shocking, too, is the apparent dislike Emerson and Greg Lake had for each other throughout their time working together in ELP. Most interesting is the tidbits concerning some of the songs- how Emerson still cringes when he hears "Lucky Man" because he had played a better solo to the ending in the studio, but it mistakenly didn't get recorded, or how the Nice recorded an initial scratch track of "America" in the studio which was to be built upon, but instead an overzealous manager RELEASED the track to radio and pressed it to vinyl BEFORE the Nice could return for their follow-up studio session! From a literary standpoint, this book sorely lacks an editor; there are places where there is no continuity- Emerson's relationship with his wife and family is interwoven into the Nice and ELP years, but suddenly Emerson is living alone in L.A., with no prior mention of any type of separation from his family; similarly, Pete Sinfield, whose co-writing was integral to ELP throughout their career, isn't even mentioned until near the very end of the book; and there are also occasional grammatical errors, incomplete sentences, etc. However, my 5 star rating is solidly based on content, and this book certainly delivers! If you are an ELP fan like myself, this is a must-read.

Blows Like a Horn: Beat Writing, Jazz, Style, and Markets in the Transformation of U.S. Culture, by Preston Whaley Jr.

Reopening the canons of the Beat Generation, Blows Like a Horn traces the creative counterculture movement as it cooked in the heat of Bay Area streets and exploded into spectacles, such as the scandal of the Howl trial and the pop culture joke of beatnik caricatures.

Preston Whaley shows Beat artists riding the glossy exteriors of late modernism like a wave. Participants such as Lawrence Lipton, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and at great personal cost, even Jack Kerouac, defied the traditional pride of avant-garde anonymity. They were ambitious to change the culture and used mass-mediated scandal, fame, and distortion to attract knowing consumers to their poetry and prose.

Blows Like a Horn follows the Beats as they tweaked the volume of excluded American voices. It watches vernacular energies marching through Beat texts on their migration from shadowy urban corners and rural backwoods to a fertile, new hyper-reality, where they warped into stereotypes. Some audiences were fooled. Others discovered truths and were changed.

Mirroring the music of the era, the book breaks new ground in showing how jazz, much more than an ambient soundtrack, shaped the very structures of Beat art and social life. Jazz, an American hybrid--shot through with an earned-in-the-woodshed, African American style of spontaneous intelligence--also gave Beat poetry its velocity and charisma.

Blows Like a Horn plumbs the actions and the art of celebrated and arcane Beat writers, from Allen Ginsberg to ruth weiss. The poetry, the music, the style--all of these helped transform U.S. culture in ways that are still with us.

Review
Mr. Whaley, in this book, takes an academic approach to a subject that is just now beginning to attract scholarly interest. He thoroughly fleshes out a range of sources that span the artistic spectrum in order to give balance and objectivity to his treatment of American culture during the bebop and beat eras. The 1960s, with the Civil Rights Movement, the advent of hippie culture, and the protests against the Vietnam War, has long garnered attention from scholars, writers, musical historians, and filmmakers alike. In the popular conception of pop culture, the 1950s are often labeled boring or drab by comparison. Preston Whaley's analysis, however, will go a long way toward identifying the cultural movements of the 1940s and 1950s as part of a linear whole, a direct predecessor of the cultural revolution of the late 1960s. (Douglas Brinkley, author of World War II: the Axis Assault, 1939-1942)

This book has a nice exuberance and conviction, a consistent vision and a persuasively engaging tone. It has a winsome, masculinist, optimistic, expansive style that is reminiscent of beat literature itself. (Maria Damon, author of The Dark End of the Street: Margins in American Vanguard Poetry)

Whaley's Blows Like a Horn made me want to read ruth weiss, see The Subterraneans, reread Visions of Cody and well, I already listen to Coltrane and read Howl all the time...but these are signs to me of a very effective book. Whaley wants to find a new way of talking about the Beats and post-Beat culture, one that doesn't fall into the rhetoric of liberation and resistance that is so common in the analyses of this genre, or to the cultural studies critiques of the beats that have pointed out the movement's appropriation by the hegemonic structures of Western, white, patriarchal, hetero capitalism and left it there. Whaley looks for a hitherto ignored space in Beat culture in which the aspirations, experiments and prejudices of the Beats can be directly related to precisely the kind of struggles that cultural studies itself is engaged in as a field. The Beats may not solve all problems, but they are aware of many of them, to varying degrees. There's a subtle, improvisatory quality to Whaley's writing that mirrors the kind of in situ politics and aesthetics that he's trying to evoke in Beat culture. He moves between high and low, personal and theoretical as the situation needs. He talks to the reader directly. There's a refreshing directness here, a willingness to address fundamental human situations. (Marcus Boon, author of The Road of Excess: A History of Writers on Drugs)

Looking at the interface between literature and jazz, Whaley focuses on the development of the Beat scene and the social and economic factors that fed it. 'Immediacy of emotion' is what he finds central to--and prizes in--both the poetry and music that came of age in the Beat period. A rich sense of political history enhances Whaley's analysis and his writing on jazz is as knowledgeable as his grasp of the literature of the period. He discusses such major figures in the movement as Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, offering particularly original and compelling studies of the often-disparaged film version of Kerouac's Subterraneans and of Kerouac's posthumous novel, Visions of Cody. Equally valuable is discussion of less-known personalities (ruth weiss, Bob Kaufman) and the personal and social infighting in the Beat subculture...Written in a clear and forceful style...this volume deserves a long life. (B. Wallenstein Choice 2005-02-01)

Like all of my writings, what you are about to read was guided by Higher Realms of Consciousness, which includes the One I refer to as God. After being 'prompted' to put a series of five transformational CD's, out into the world, "The Hierarchy Takes You To The Heavens," "Transformation," "How A Powerful Woman Awakens," "Cosmic Wisdom," and The Five Contemplations of Bliss," people world-wide asked if I would put into writing, the words to each. I said yes. The words, the prayers, and the mantras in these five segments will serve you as daily reminders of how to choose into Mastery of your life. We are entering turbulent times and we must know how to rise above the turbulence, no longer spectators or victims. We need the tools, the prayers, the mantras, and information directly from the Hierarchy regarding the ways in which to be empowered, daily.

The book I would write if I had more talent, if I weren't so disorganized and if I were not such a lazy person.
By Amazon Customer
This book is the reason I support indie authors who self publish on Amazon. Yes, granted, I have paid for a lot of poorly written, half baked ideas with little to no editing...I do this because partly because I want the author to know that maybe I liked his concept for a story, or I actually do like his half baked idea. Mostly I do it for same reason that the same crazy looking people always come to my house every time I have a garage sale. That one time...that one Elvis commerative plate that they paid 50 for that turned out to be worth $100, that one great find that nobody was aware of.

This is one of those books for me.

This author has written a sci-fi story that contains several things that make it great. First, a believeable, likeable protagonist. Second, a great cast of fleshed out, supporting characters that you feel like contribute to the story. Third, the author manages to write the plot of a story that progresses in a believable, awesome fashion despite its futuristic setting. Easier said than done. Lastly, this author writes combat, and hand to hand violence in a really gripping fashion in a way that not a lot of authors are capable of doing. It's intense, real and most importantly, authentic.

Worth it....Trust me....a random guy on the Internet...trust me anyway...

Highly entertaining.
By Orion M
Elliott Kay is a very witty man.

Having read him before, I already knew this, of course. But it was quickly reinforced in the first three dozen pages - Elliott Kay is a very witty man.

Poor Man's Fight is a fairly quick read and the story is fairly fast-paced. The major players are revealed quickly and gracefully, and the major conflicts are neatly foreshadowed in the first few chapters. By the finish, you'll realize that you've just elegantly wrapped up a dozen plot threads you hadn't quite realized were there. A very well-crafted, highly entertaining story. It took a day of my life, and I was happy to give it.

Dialogue is probably Kay's strongest point. Characters banter and chatter, and it feels natural. They commiserate. They argue. They fight. And by the end, you know them. Especially Malone, who - while not always *likable* - is immensely human. Even when he's knee-deep in blood.

If you like military sci-fi and are a person with $2.99 (plus tax, if applicable), you should purchase this book immediately.

Enjoyable book
By Carroll C. Haston
I picked up this book based simply on amazons recommendations based on my reading habits. Unfortunately this does not always work out, but this time it was simply fabulous. Superb editing, if there were any flaws or mistakes I did not even see them. The story was fun, action packed and the scenes were set up in a way that made it all seem within the realm of possibility.

I stopped reading this book halfway through to see if there were any other books by this author. I bought the only other book and then finished up Poor Man's Fight. I will be recommending this book to friends and truly hope the author gets a sequel out soon. Unlikely due to when this was published but I can hope.

Read it, you will be glad you did.

Environment and Politics (Routledge Introductions to Environment: Environment and Society Texts), by Timothy Doyle, Doug McEachern, Sheril

Environment and Politics 4th Edition is a concise introduction to this ever-expanding interdisciplinary field, explaining and illustrating how concepts, conflicts, movements, political systems and the practices of policy-making can be analysed in a systematic way. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the key themes that shape the field, and examines a diverse range of environmental problems and policy solutions found in different countries and cultures.

The new edition has been extensively revised to include up-to-date explanation of green political theories and traditions and the debates that shape action on the ground. It contains an expanded discussion of environmental movements that work in the Global North, the Global South and transnationally. Greater attention has been given to the roles of corporations, non-governmental organizations, the media, consumers and citizens in order to reflect the changing nature of environmental governance. The text also focuses throughout on debates surrounding the concepts of environmental security, environmental justice and environmental citizenship.

The authors examine the institutional responses of parliaments, administrative, legal and electoral systems; the more informal politics of social movements; and the politics of markets and the corporate sector as they respond to (or resist) the greening of societies. This engaging text has been fully updated to offer readers a greater understanding of international, national and local environmental politics as well as expected future developments at all levels.

Environment and Politics continues to use illustrative examples of conflicts, people and events spanning North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia, giving it global perspective and relevance.

Each chapter includes questions for debate as well as a list of key words and resources for independent research. This successful textbook remains a key resource for undergraduate and postgraduate studies across politics, environmental studies, development studies and human geography courses.
