Concise Useful Principles High on Content

Understanding Other People is well titled; a useful, earthy and concise book, especially for someone who hasn't been through one of the "Leadership" seminars. I finally settled on four stars for the merits of the book with one star off for the "demerits." Flaxington is succinct and largely descriptive. The use of the term "secrets" in the subtitle is good marketing, everyone wants to know "secrets."

Flaxington's premises are basically that you're going to get along easily with some people, with others it may not be easy but if you understand what's going on you may be able to make it work, and in other cases you either live with the situation or move on, but you're not going to change it. Straightforward enough, and Flaxington's value added are principles, context and the real and rare strength of the book, a clear and honest assessment that you're not going to change other people. The first chapter is a good reminder to check our own perspectives, but unless you're reading this at someone else's suggestion, there's a good probability you're above average in self awareness.

The Chapter "Don't Assume I Know What You Mean" is valuable enough to justify reading the book. The tools and thoughts from that chapter are universally useful.

The two "demerit" areas, based upon my "filters," are the lack of context for DISC and not addressing personality disorders. The DISC behavior style assessment is one of many communication/personality/behavior/value diagnostics; Myers-Briggs may be the most widely recognized. It would be good to know, briefly, why the author believes DISC is a good choice relative to other alternatives. She does state that it is validated and proven. Flaxington fully discloses she is a franchisee of the DISC system and this comment is not a criticism of DISC. Second, and the reason I took off one star, none of this really applies if you're interacting with someone with a serious psychological problem, a narcissistic bully for example, not just a behavioral style preference. That's a huge topic in itself but it's necessary and worth at least a short chapter in a book titled Understanding Other People, especially since estimates suggest that a significant and increasing portion of the population exhibits serious personality disorder symptoms.

Is it time for a filter change?

There are plenty of business books available out there to help us better understand the behavior of others. The problem I have found with most of them is that they are written from the perspective of the clinical psycologist, not from the persective of the business leader, rendering them of little or limited value. No so with UNDERSTANDING OTHER PEOPLE: THE FIVE SECRETS OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR, by Beverly Flaxington.

The book begins by examining the many built in filters we use to view the world. Our filters don't necessarily make us right or wrong, they simply determine our viewpoint. One person may be devastated by the death of Michael Jackson. The next person may view it as, "One less pedophile in the world." One person may view Barack Obama as the Messiah, the next person may view him as the anti-Christ. These are just the filters each person sees things with.

Flaxington teaches us that by being aware of our filters, we are more cognizant of the fact that we are not necessarily right or wrong, we're just us. This concept leads us to understanding the principle of "It's all about me." The author cogently explains this simple truth by asking the reader to consider a time when we went out of our way to help someone, supposedly out of our own goodness, only to be offended when the recipient failed to "according to our filters" properly thank us.

The book continues in subsequent chapters to explain how these filters create difficulties in relationships, work environments and every day life with those around us. The concept being, by more clearly understanding why we, and those we interact with, react the way we do, we will begin to find ways to work towards what Dr. Stephen Covey calls, "Win-win, or no deal" and "seek first to understand, then to be understood."

I will stop here as I don't wish to give away additional content. The book is a quick, easy read. It is very well written and you will find lessons with immediate applicability.

Everyone should read and own this book

This fabulous, concise, wisdom rich book is helping me to better understand myself in addition to others. The 5 secrets to understanding human behavior are revealed in a way that is easy to understand and incorporate into one's daily personal and professional life. I find these tools more natural to use than the other tools I am familiar with, including but not limited to Myers-Briggs, and Enneagram.

Using the Disc behavioral and core value tools, I have a clearer insight into human nature. `Don't assume I know what you mean' is one of the good personal reminders to place more context around my messages.

I intend to keep this book close to me until the 5 secrets have become a natural way of life for me, meanwhile I will pick up a few more copies for my friends. You should too!

About the Author
George MacDonald was a Scottish author and minister best known for his fairy tales and fantasy novels. A theologian, MacDonald was pastor of Trinity Congregational Church in Arundel before moving to London to teach at the University of London. MacDonald s work influenced many fantasy writers including J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and Madeleine L Engle; he is recognized as a mentor to Lewis Carroll and heavily influenced Carroll s decision to submit Alice s Adventures in Wonderland for publication. MacDonald was a prolific writer, and penned such fantasy classics as Phantastes, The Princess and the Goblin, and Lillith. George MacDonald died in 1905.

Alister, who had inherited but the little that remained of the land which had begrudging provided his once-mighty and still-proud clan a meager subsistence-the land known as Strathruadh-, was finding it increasingly difficult to care for his beloved people. The very land on which the village stood was now the property of a lowlander-a man who cared for neither the land nor the people, but whose sole interest lay in his investment, prestige, and prominence. The small portion of land remaining to Alister was his to farm, to nurture, to love. Oh, how he loved this hard, barren, hilly, heather-covered, wasteland. But God loved Alister far more than Alister could love the land, and, as a result, a sacrifice must be made. Alister must be made to choose between the seen and unseen; must be made to understand that ownership is not to own. God created and retains ownership of all things. We are given but a brief stint upon this earth that we may learn that which He would have us learn.

One of MacDonald's best

Actually, I might agree with the reviewer who said this is the BEST MacDonald book because I was looking forward to rereading it when enough time had elapsed, and I'm doing that now, and, oh, how I am enjoying it! Not too much dialect to wade through in this one--just enough to give it flavor. And the two main characters are so appealing and interesting that you are happy to be spending time with them in the process of reading about them. Lots of spiritual meat to chew on, and you love the chewing because of the characters and the story, which is unpredictable and completely satisfying. I didn't find a dull passage anywhere. I felt uplifted and wiser and somehow happier when I finished the book the first time. I'm taking my time through this second time so that I can savor it fully.

The problem is some of the printing is poor. Some lines words letters did not print completely. In some cases making it hard to understand what is written. For the price it should be perfect.

An Important Eclectic Collection

Buy this book for your family, it is truly remarkable. Using everything from famous speeches to modern day slam poetry, "Why Freedom Matters" explains how important the concept of freedom is. The book is broken into five major sections with the various writings set into the theme of each section. The writings reflect different parts of american history from both an American perspective as well as a foreign perspective. D.H. Lawrence wrote a poem about censors that both makes you laugh and shiver at the same time. One of my personal favorites in this book is the letter from Kurt Vonnegut to a chairman of a school board for burning his book. It is his reaction that still gives me hope for our future as a country. This book also contains many women from the annuals of history who are mostly forgotten. This book accomplishes what many school texts do not, giving an appreciation for history without booring the subject to death. There is something here for everybody. This is one that should be added to the personal libraries of every household.

A wonderful treasury

"Why Freedom Matters" is a magnificent digest of American political and social thought based upon the arguments presented in the Declaration of Independence. It presents a series of documents that share in common certain themes taken by the editor from Thomas Jefferson's words. Included are incisive introductions to the selections (the dichotomy between Robert Frost's 'The Gift Outright' and the speech of Chief Seattle is fascinating) as well as the complete texts of the Declaration and the Constitution of the United States.

An excellent resource for all American citizens, "Why Freedom Matters" contains our most important national documents--and the words and thoughts of the generations who have sought to fulfill the promises contained therein.

What a collection!

A motley collection of articles more or less remotely connected to patriotism and the American way of life. I some time trying to figure out why some items were included while others were obvious. I think it's not a bad "coffee table" or "bathroom" book where you might want to peruse some of the articles without reading the book from first to last page.

Publication of this long-awaited volume makes available for the first time in complete and accessible form the most important source of information on Lincoln's early life. For twenty-five years after the president's death William Herndon, his law partner, conducted interviews with and solicited letters from dozens of persons who knew Lincoln personally. Up to now, the valuable information he collected has been available only in a microfilm edition in the Library of Congress, of such poor quality that it has been rarely used, particularly since there was no table of contents or adequate index, and in collections at the Huntington Library and the Illinois State Historical Library. The only previous publication of Herndon's materials, more than a half century ago, contains less than 10 percent of the collection and is so unreliable that scholars have hesitated to use it. Douglas Wilson and Rodney Davis have earned the gratitude and admiration of scholars by taking on the daunting task of collating the collections in the three libraries, painstakingly deciphering the all but illegible handwriting of Herndon and some of his informants, and carefully documenting the entire work.

A major contribution to Lincoln studies

With Herndon's Informants Douglas L. Wilson and Rodney O. Davis have made a tremendous contribution to Lincoln scholarship. Much of what we know of Lincoln's pre-presidential years, especially, was compiled through interviews and correspondence by Lincoln's last law partner William H. Herndon. Although many of these items were published decades ago in Emanuel Hertz's anthology The Hidden Lincoln, that collection's limitations have long frustrated Lincoln students. The only alternative was the expensive and awkward-to-use microfilm verison of Herndon's papers available from the Library of Congress.

Now, however, Wilson and Davis have made this treasure trove of firsthand information available in an affordable and convenient format. Moreover, they have carefully tried to reproduce texts exactly, retaining oddities of spelling and punctuation, a feature entertaining to ordinary readers and valuable to scholars. The book's presentation of documents in chronological order is welcome. Scholars will probably be the main consumers using this product.

This volume is a major contribution to Lincoln studies.

The Real Lincoln!!

Forget authors, historians with agendas. Read what the people who actually knew Abraham Lincoln said about him.

Before Lincoln's body was cold, William Herndon, Lincoln's law partner for 17 years and friend for longer, began interviewing Lincoln's friends, family members, enemies, acquaintances, neighbors, etc. His goal was to collect as much information as possible about his friend, so he could write a completely truthful biography. "Warts and all" Herndon said. Unfortunately, Herndon soon realized he could not use some of the information he collected because it was very personal and Lincoln's image would be tarnished. Fortunately, some of this information he could not use you will find in this book. While 98% of this book contains very interesting information about all aspects of Lincoln's life. It is the remaining 2%, the unsavory stuff, that is so fascinating! For instance, I was surprised to read about the number of Lincoln's friends who told stories about Lincoln's involvement with prostitutes (before his marriage). Some friends even speculate about Lincoln maybe having one or two illegitimate children. This book contains information I never learned in school about Lincoln!

Endlessly fascinating

Herndon's Informants is a book created primarily to give scholars easier access to the wealth of recollections, rumors, and confabulations which were collected by Lincoln's last law partner in the years following the President's death. But it is also of interest to amateur historians who have a keen interest in both the great man and in the way that memory evolves, distorted by time, experience, and intent. I am not a Lincoln specialist--just an ordinary reader who greatly enjoyed dipping into the source material from which grew many legends (some more or less true) of Lincoln's early life: outrageous candidates for Lincoln's father; the undeniable hardscrabble childhood; his struggles to educate himself; his earliest speeches; his participation in the Black Hawk War; the overblown Ann Rutledge tale. Was Lincoln naturally melancholy? Did he drink? Was he an atheist? There are no definitive answers, but the conflicting insights and speculations of those who knew him will intrigue you.

Many letters Herndon collected bear witness to the marginal literacy of Lincoln's family and some friends; a few correspondents apologized for the delay in answering Herndon's questions with the explanation that they had had no access to pen and paper--a striking reminder of the milieu in which he created himself and the intellectual isolation that was its inevitable concomitant. There are too vivid glimpses of a way of life that was already vanishing in 1865: Herndon took care to ask the people whom he interviewed and corresponded with about pioneer life, clothing, games, songs, dances, religious practices, trees, flowers and wild game, even the prices for labor and produce in the first half of the 19th century.

The material is arranged in the order Herndon collected it, rather than by informant or subject; misspellings, repetitions, weird punctuation, missing words, etc., are all "as found." Because the book is designed for Lincoln specialists, footnotes tend to be unenlightening; very brief biographical information about the informants is collected in a separate section, as well as a helpful summary of the confusing Hanks family genealogy. Material is copiously indexed by name and subject. There is only one illustration--a rough map of New Salem, Illinois.

Overall, this is a rewarding read for those willing to work through raw material in search of the enigma that is Abraham Lincoln.
