Awesome Book for the fundamentals of Compiler Design

I am a Professor in Computer Science and of course I use dragon book as the text book for teaching Compiler Design to undergraduate students. The most interesting thing which I noticed with this book by Prof. Thomas Parsons is its lucid presentation. He has left no stone unturned to explain the basics very clearly and of course with very little emphasis on mathematical background. As he himself make this point clearly in his introduction, it can definitely be used to learn the fundamentals very clearly with enough examples. I admire the book very much and would definitely recommend to all my students who would be interested in using a nice introductory book before embarking on their journey through dragon book.

excellent parser explanations

I have several books on compilers and this one by far is the best when it comes to explaining parsers. The explanations are almost perfectly balanced with implementation details and examples without getting lost in the theory and formalism. Most other books get carried away with all the greek letters but this one does an excellent job of interspersing just the right amount pseudo-code so that the reader doesn't get lost.

Intelligent book

I think Parsons had an intelligent idea in writing this book. Without originality claims (as he point out in the preface) the book is intended to the audience of novices, with the clear target of explaining in great details compilers principles. As he says in the preface, the objective is to prepare the reader for more advanced lectures, and he explicitly mention the reference book as an example: Aho-Sethi-Ullman's "Compilers: Principles, Techniques and Tools", a.k.a the Dragon book.
The approach is quite theoretical and principles-centered, just as the Dragon book is. But Parsons departs from this in the writing style: It is definitely straightforward. He sacrifices the scope of the book in favor of clarity: he took the core of books like the Dragon, and expanded this core to a well appreaciable extent. It comes over and over again on more awkward concepts with detailed examples.
Reading the Dragon is not extremely difficult, but requires time. No question that doing it after Parsons' is another thing, absolutely. In this, he succeeded perfectly in its objective.
The price is definitely not exaggerated (especially for the paperback version), and adding this to the book's quality, should not let think twice in buying it.

Players like finishing drills!

I would recommend this book if you are looking to get many players involved in drills. It isn't really for individual or small groups, these are team drills and I found many of them helpfull to incorporate into my practices.

Real World Drills

There is no finer book for a quick reference when you need a specific training drill. We have all been caught as a coach with more or less players to train than we thought, and this book gives you a ready reckoner and quick fire aid to finding the perfect drill. I have used almost all of these drills and I have modified, joined and built up several into full blown training sessions. I have even used some of these principles for my National Coaching license course. All-in-all, a great book and one to stuff in your training bag. You will use it!

I've bought several coaching books lately and this one takes the cake. It has lots of drills to help make a team well rounded in all areas of soccer. I would highly recommend this book to any coach looking for drills to help facilitate a good practice.

Another good book

This is a good addition to the scrap metal workshop series. I really like it and recommend it. One caution though, unlike the other books this one does require a bit of welding knowledge and access to welding equipment unlike the other books which required only simple tools found in most garages or were easy and inexpensive to acquire.

About the Author
Gary Gerani is a screenwriter, author, noted film and TV historian, and children’s product developer. He is best known as the cowriter of the film Pumpkinhead; the author of the book Fantastic Television; and creator, editor, and writer of literally hundreds of Topps trading card sets since 1972. He lives in California.

Robert V. Conte is a pop-culture consultant who, armed with his vast memorabilia collection, utilizes his expertise on a myriad of officially licensed products, including Godzilla, Kiss, and Sesame Street. He has three children and is the subject of a forthcoming documentary film, Rebuilding Robert. He lives in New York.

The Topps Company, Inc., founded in 1938, is the preeminent creator and brand marketer of sports cards, entertainment products, and distinctive confectionery.

Every Card You had, Every Card You Missed

From the dust jacket, to board art to essays, to every page of content, and on back to the bonus material this book is perfection. Those of us that collected the cards as they came out will be in nostalgia heaven. The fronts and backs of every card and sticker are shown. Captions throughout comment on creative be decisions, the card making process, legal concerns, and Topps relationship with the studio. Bonus material includes an epilogue that covers the Wonderbread cards, and 4 actual cards affixed to the back cover.

and this first volume in a series covering the Topps Star Wars card sets of the 70s & 80s are a great addition to that series

I'm a big fan of the Topps/Abrams line of nostalgic trading card books that have been coming out over the last few years (Wacky Packages, Garbage Pail Kids, and the Mars Attacks), and this first volume in a series covering the Topps Star Wars card sets of the 70s & 80s are a great addition to that series. I love that they're carrying over the fun graphic design elements from book to book (the faux wax wrapper dust covers, the imagery of the gum on the covers, etc.) and that they volumes are becoming increasingly more comprehensive. In the past the books have focused on 1-3 sets of cards per book, but this Star Wars volume collects all five series of the 1977-1979 cards. I also love that they exponentially increased the amount of commentary contained within the book (past books featured introductions and afterwards, but nut much else in the way of "new" content to accompany the card imagery.)

The only minor quibbles I have with this volume are that they end up wasting a bit of space by not blowing up the card scans to fill out more of the pages, and they didn't take care to feature keep corresponding cardbacks with their fronts. As for the former, I know a lot of folks suggest that the card scans are presented at full size, but they're actually larger than standard trading cards. So if they were going to go ahead and present them in a larger format they might as well have gone ahead and made them even larger to fill out the book. With the latter, I understand that a large number of the cards feature puzzle-backs that would not make sense to showcase individually next to the card fronts, but they could have at least done this with the cards that had story or fun-fact card backs. It would keep the reader from having to flip around in the book to get the feel of the card set. Just my two cents.

All in all, this is a wonderful addition to the Topps/Abrams trading card series and I hope that we'll soon see an announcement for a third volume concentrating on the Return of the Jedi sets after they release volume two this coming April.

A Delightful Book of Memories!

I once owned all of the original Topps Star Wars cards when they were first released. Purchasing this book took me back to my youth, when me and my friends would trade our doubles to each other -- in order to complete our collections. This books has every card, as well as every sticker! I also got a thrill at the cover of the book... as it fairly replicates the look (and feel) of the old packs of cards.There's even a mock piece of gum photographed on the front cover to simulate opening up a pack of cards.

The only slight gripe I have with the book is the quality of the pictures taken of the cards. All of them aren't perfect, as it seems that the author took pictures from used cards to create this book. It doesn't detract from my overall excellent opinion of the content, but I was expecting better quality from the source.

Nice coverage, little interoperability

I was looking particularly forward to this book, in large part because I confused the author - Dwight Peltzer - with the talented Charles Petzold, author of the seminal Programming Windows. Hopefully others will not be similarly confused, because Peltzer lets his almost-namesake down.
The premise behind the book is that .NET and J2EE are two of the leading technologies being used for large systems today. This is true, and neither is "merely" a programming language but a complex suite of tools that offer many enterprise-grade facilities.
Rather than take a biased view that one is necessarily better than the other or "Microsoft is evil" and the like, Peltzer recognises that the real nuts-and-bolts I.T. worker needs to be up-to-speed on both platforms. Hence, the book takes a pragmatic approach and strives to explain how to make these two interoperate in a heterogeneous environment.
Alas, this explanation never occurs. The back cover blurb proudly states the book has been technically reviewed by both Microsoft and Sun and that it is a one-of-a-kind resource giving solutions to cross-platform communications. It asserts Peltzer examines many technical issues arising from integrating .NET and J2EE. But, sorry, I just don't see it - unless you count the penultimate chapter, a throw-away discussing third-party tools.
Instead, eight chapters go into detail about what .NET and J2EE are and aren't, and what they can do - by themselves. The last chapter even has some real "best-practice" suggestions. Yet, every single example is .NET talking to .NET, Java talking to Java - again, unless you count the brief coverage of third-party offerings.
To his credit, Peltzer does give more than just surface coverage of each technology and possibly a good programmer could make use of the information given to work out how to interoperate the languages (for instance, working directly with XML structures). Nevertheless, this isn't a book on .NET & J2EE interoperability; a better title would be ".NET & J2EE: A guide to each".

Hmm, even one star does not do justice to this book. The first couple of chapters deal with .net and the other chapters deal with the fundamentals of j2ee. The coverage of each seems to be ok, but not to an extend that you can actually learn something from it. Just what i am saying, it is coverage for 2 times 6 or 7 chapters. E.g. the cover of the book mentions XML, in my opinion an integral part of j2ee. But hey, it is not mentioned in the J2EE section.

Then finally this book seems to discuss interoperability, and guess what, it does not. The last chapter discusses a commercial tool (who ownes the shares?) which should help you out. But is that the only way, or only solution for interoperability ?

In my case there is just nothing in the book that could help me out, so i gave it a one star

Bored to tears

This book discusses on .NET and J2EE basics and more of their integration options than interoperability. It does'nt make sense to call it as interoperability, in one of the chapters the author suggests to use a COTS interface to enable right terms is integration than interoperability. No question, The book is well-written with good explanation of concepts but the book lacks practical examples. And it is also boring to choose only SOAP/XML Web services for everything. If that is the only option then we need to live with it.

Whitney looks at such frequently asked questions as: Why can't I get by on my own? Why should I go to church? Why should I give of myself to the church? Why do I need to worship in church? Couldn't I just worship in nature? Why does it matter whether I become a member of the church?Committed love must mark the local expression of the body of Christ. About the Author
DON WHITNEY has been Professor of Biblical spirituality and Associate Dean at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, since 2005. Before that, he held a similar position (the first such position in the six Southern Baptist seminaries) at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, MO, for 10 years. He is the founder and president of The Center for Biblical Spirituality. Don is a frequent speaker in churches, retreats, and conferences in the U.S. and abroad.

Don grew up in Osceola, AR, where he came to believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. After graduating from Arkansas State, Don planned to finish law school and pursue a career in sportscasting. While at the University of Arkansas School of Law, he sensed God's call to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. He then enrolled at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX, graduating with a Master of Divinity degree in 1979. In 1987, Don completed a Doctor of Ministry degree at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, IL. He earned a PhD in theology at the University of the Free State in Bloemfonteine, South Africa in 2013.

Prior to his ministry as a seminary professor, Don pastored Glenfield Baptist Church in Glen Ellyn, IL (a Chicago suburb), for almost 15 years. Altogether, he's served local churches in pastoral ministry for 24 years.

He is the author of Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, which has a companion Study Guide. He has also written How Can I Be Sure I'm a Christian?, Spiritual Disciplines Within the Church, Ten Questions to Diagnose Your Spiritual Health, Simplify Your Spiritual Life, and Family Worship. His hobby is restoring and using old fountain pens.

Don lives with his wife, Caffy, in their home near Louisville. She teaches classes for seminary wives and is an artist, muralist, and illustrator. The Whitneys are parents of Laurelen.

Corporate Spirituality

This is a solid book on corporate spirituality, exploring the dynamics of spiritual formation in the church through disciplines such as serving, giving, praying, attending ordinances, hearing the preached word, learning, fellowshipping, etc. Some chapters are better than others (the best chapters are the ones on worship and prayer and the final chapter which gives guidance on how to research a church before joining it), but all are worth reading. The book is sprinkled with some helpful illustrations and great quotations from the Puritan/Reformed tradition. This is a good follow-up to Whitney's more popular book Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life.

Best Book on Church

This book is the best book on what is expecting from a church member, a church and what to do at church. It is the best Biblical based church guideline I have ever read. Easy read and easy to follow. This book will cure the modern churches problems. Get it.
