lucky purchase!

I purchased this cookbook on a whim . . . my entire family enjoys ethnic foods, and the recipes were from all over the world. I have owned it for 3 days now, and the book has already more than paid for itself! So far, I've made 7 of the dishes, and we have all raved over them. Our daughters, ages 21 and 19, carefully divided the leftovers for lunches, making sure that they each got their share the following day . . . then they wolfed their portions down!

The lentil and artichoke salad w/salsa verde is our favorite recipe so far. I did omit the anchovies, but the capers, fresh herbs, Dijon mustard, made for a very savory salsa that was perfect with the black lentils and artichoke hearts. The salsa would also go well on many different dishes, including fish or chicken.

The Greek salad with butter beans, feta, olives, etc. was superb, and the quinoa, corn and tuna salad was inspired. I used smoked trout in the hot smoked salmon and cannellini bean salad with gremolata, and the substitution worked quite well! I will know to make double batches of these salads in the future, and I would be proud to offer any of them to guests.

The lemon and cardamom basmati rice was great, although I did replace the rice bran oil with toasted peanut oil and added a tad of cumin and cayenne to give the dish a little more punch. I also cooled the rice thoroughly before assembly, which made for a nice side dish on a very hot day.

The spicy cornbread is a robust, flavorful take on a family favorite. It would go particularly well with several of the middle Eastern soups and stews in the book. The chocolate and aduki bean paste phyllo fingers look delicious, as does the recipe for Lebanese rose and pistachio rice pudding. I am going to enjoy trying many of these recipes, over the next several weeks and months. I have a very extensive cookbook collection, and this one has already climbed into my 'top five favorites' list.

So glad I purchased this...

Heard about this cookbook via Ready Made Magazine. It had some recipes and a mini article on author. I wanted to throw a dinner party so I could cook all the recipes.

Fast forward a few weeks. Bought the cookbook and am glad I did. There's a good mix of meat and vegetarian items and the author even offers advice how to cook some of the recipes vegetarian.

I've cooked about 8 recipes since buying this (which is a lot since I'm a full-time mom of 2). My toddler has loved everything we've made.

I wish there was more quinoa recipes in here, but I can always substitute.

The beautiful photos inspire me to want to cook everything.

Great Recipes, Excellent Photos & Lots of Substitution Options

Trying to eat healthier is a real challenge in my house. My husband automatically dislikes anything labeled "healthy" or "low-fat" or "vegetarian." It's a bummer.

However, I have been able to slowly introduce beans, lentils and brown rice into our meals. I think my husband likes them because none of these ingredients are typical "diet" ingredients.

This cookbook showcases all the above ingredients and more in lots of different meal options. This book includes appetizers, soups, salads, sides, main dishes and sweet things. I gave the cookbook to my husband and asked him to pick out a couple of recipes for next week's dinners. He chose lamb and vegetable soup with split peas and barley (we will be subbing pork tenderloin for the lamb) and fava bean, feta and dill salad. The pictures make the recipes come alive and look so delicious and enticing.

I also like how many of the recipes have vegetarian options at the bottom of the original recipe. Also most the recipes don't require a bunch of special ingredients that are expensive to buy and then you never use them again. There are lots of substitution options in each recipe. For example one recipe calls for black lentils but notes that if you don't have access to black lentils you can sub in Puy lentils. Another recipe calls for pumpkin flesh but offers up butternut squash as a substitute if fresh pumpkin isn't in season. I especially like that the author built in such flexibility in the recipes.

I brought this cookbook to a baby shower today to show my mom and the book went around the whole room. Everyone was asking copies of this recipe or that recipe. In closing, I suspect I will end up using this recipe book a lot and now I know what to give everyone for Christmas.

Well-researched treatment of Western society's relationships with the domestic animal kingdom. Citing literature, art and historical accounts, this book traces the history of animals as fictional characters, anthropomorphic characters, beasts of burden, food, companions, and even lovers to humans. Interesting and enlightening stories accompany statistics to unjudgmentally describe these relationships and society's reaction.

I would love to see a sequel dealing with other cultures.

Love the Meatmen series!

These sexy gay comix are some of the best in the business. There are some lame ones that don't do much for Mr Woody but most are entertaining and exciting. I have most of the Meatmen series.

Vol.25: The Slickest Collection Yet?

10 artists contribute to the raunchy proceedings this time, with more highlights than usual. "Teasy Meat" by Zack (the cover story) is about a porn director who'll stop at nothing to get what-and who-he wants. "Going Long.... ....Going Deep" by Farraday is a comedy about a football players. Farraday's writing continues to far out-distance his still-amateurish art, but the drawing's come a long way, as I see a lot of improvement with background details, anatomy and use of perspective. "Stagecoach" by John Blackburn sees his Voodoo Love-God Coley Cochran in Western gear to entertain guests at a theme park. As usual, this gets my vote as the HOTTEST story in the book, and surprisingly features a brief cameo by Quincey Quartermain, Coley's movie-producer / father-figure who to date has only appeared in the limited-edition graphic novel BREATHLESS (1991). "The Longshot" by Joe features his usual well-muscled studs enjoying a 3-way in between beers. "Newcomer" by Stepan Zubinski is a post-apocalytic sci-fi tale involving robots, mutants, gladiators and she-male geishas, all eager for sex and more sex, and features some of the most STUNNING artwork in the collection! "Camilli-Cat And The Djinns" by Patrick Fillion is heavy on sex while short on plot, while the art is very slicky-rendered, the most "mainstream"-looking in style that would fit in well on many current DC or Marvel comics. Marx Myths Dispelled in this Excellent Collection

Long before it was fashionable, Tom Bottomore began making a substantial contribution to providing readers with Marx's work in English translation. Selected Writings in Sociology and Social Philosophy, which Bottomore translated and edited, was first published in the U.S. in 1956, during the darkest days of the Cold War. The breadth of coverage in this relatively brief book is remarkable, including sources from The Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844, The German Ideology, A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy, The Communist Manifesto, The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte, the first three volumes of Capital, and much more. The selections were made from thousands of pages covering the more than forty years during which Marx was an active scholar and revolutionary. Much of the material was not published until after Marx's death, and some, notably The Grundrisse, was little known outside a select circle of Marx scholars, most of them European, until the 1970's.

In spite of the voluminous and varied nature of the literature with which he worked, Bottomore made judiciously informed choices with a clear eye to coherence, coverage, and cumulativity. Nevertheless, beginning with the editor's introduction, it is evident that this book will not be easy reading. Marx may have been a champion of the people, but he rarely wrote in a way that most of us would find easily accessible. Even his journalistic work for popular newspapers in the U.S. and elsewhere requires close attention to complex accounts, heavy-laden with detail, and sometimes containing obscure figures of speech, as well as aphorisms and time-specific truisms rendered in Latin, French, or other languages with which the reader may be unfamiliar. For readers who persevere, however, the intellectual payoff is worth the effort.

I found the introduction especially valuable because it clarifies Marx's influence on Max Weber, which, according to Bottomore, was much more favorable than is commonly claimed. In addition, the introduction alerts us to the fact that Marx had a profound effect on the thinking of Emile Durkheim and George Herbert Mead, principal figures in the development of sociology and social psychology, whose indebtedness to Marx is rarely acknowledged.

Though working nearly sixty years ago, it is abundantly evident throughout the book that the editor was aware of the conflict emerging between those who held that there was a dramatic difference between the work of the early Marx, author of The Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844, and his later work, especially the first volume of Capital. As interpreted by Louis Althusser and his structural Marxist colleagues, Marx's early efforts were the product of the poorly informed, undisciplined mind of a philosophical idealist. Only later, after Marx had progressed with his specifically economic research and his thinking had matured, did he become a rigorous scientist, a practitioner of what Engels termed historical materialism

Bottomore, however, rightly takes the position that Marx's lifetime of research and theoretical development was marked by an overarching conceptual consistency, and that there was no epistemological break marking the transformation of Marx the humanistic philosopher into Marx the scientific economist. This judgment is consistent with the wide ranging observations included in the edited volume under review. Marx's materialism, giving priority to lived experience and the objectively conflicting interests separating capital and labor, is emphasized throughout. The concept of "alienation" that figured so conspicuously in Marx's early work is plainly manifest in his later efforts, giving the lie to the often made judgment that Marx had gotten rid of this vestige of humanism as his perspective developed.

It is also clear that Bottomore was not one of those for whom Marx's economic base - institutional superstructure model of society fell out of favor. This scheme, presented in a variety of sophisticated forms, figures prominently in the observations contained in this volume, and it is presented convincingly. The editor highlights this view when he explicitly dismisses the ambiguous causal locution "economic in the last instance" as misrepresenting the unambiguous priority that Marx gave to the material foundation of capitalist society.

When I taught the sociology of education before retiring in 2010, I often found myself stuck with the conclusion that "economic context is everything." It's embarrassing to admit, but at the time I didn't realize that by doing so I was tacitly endorsing the base - superstructure configuration, with educational institutions as superstructural phenomena. Whether or not I recognized the Marxist provenance of this way of thinking, it made perfect sense, especially when evaluating empirical material such as Jean Anyon's Ghetto Schooling, John Devine's Maximum Security, and Bowles and Gintis' classic Schooling in Capitalist America.

In spite of its many virtues, Selected Writings in Sociology and Social Psychology is not a substitute for reading any of Marx's works from cover to cover, nor does the editor intend it to be. The book does, however, bring to the fore Marx's sociological and philosophical work in a way that stimulates and encourages serious readers to read more. I read this edited volume before reading a complete translation of the Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844, one of the most illuminating experiences I've had with scholarship of any sort.

Marxism distilled

Tom Bottomore's collection is the best place to start to understand Marxist thought. This book was put together in light of the publication in the `60s of many of Marx's early works which had been previously unavailable. They outline the roots of Marx's mature philosophy from a perspective that's more libertarian and romantic than his later writings indicate. Taking on the mature Marx is a daunting task and so it helps to be aware of how his thought was formed. A person can get caught up in his arcane discussions of the formation of commodities while missing the essential points, or caught up with thinking about value and the labor theory of value without getting why they're important in the first place, so leaving much of that out is no great loss for the beginner. The most important aspect of this book, though, has to be that it shatters the notion that Marxism is a closed, hermeneutic, system which only makes self-referential sense. If you think that Marx only makes sense if you already believe in Marxism read this book to be disabused of you're notions.

About the Author
The Unwritten Laws of Engineering was originally written by W. J. (William Julian) King as a series of three articles published by Mechanical Engineering magazine in 1944 and was subsequently released as a book by The American Society of Mechanical Engineers. King had been a General Electric engineer who retired as a UCLA engineering professor in 1969. He died in 1983. James Skakoon is General Manager of VERTEX Technology, an engineering consulting firm, and the author of Detailed Mechanical Design: A Practical Guide (2000). He lives in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

However menial and trivial your early assignments may appear, give them your best efforts.


Many young businesspeople feel that minor chores are beneath their dignity and unworthy of their college training. They expect to prove their true worth in some major, vital enterprise. Actually, the spirit and effectiveness with which you tackle your first humble tasks will very likely be carefully watched and may affect your entire career.

Occasionally you may worry unduly about where your job is going to get you—whether it is sufficiently strategic or significant. Of course these are pertinent considerations and you would do well to take some stock of them. But by and large, it is fundamentally true that if you take care of your present job well, the future will take care of itself. This is particularly so within large corporations, which constantly search for competent people to move into more responsible positions. Success depends so largely upon personality, native ability, and vigorous, intelligent prosecution of any job that it is no exaggeration to say that your ultimate chances are much better if you do a good job on some minor detail than if you do a mediocre job as a project leader. Furthermore, it is also true that if you do not first make a good showing on your present job you are not likely to be given the opportunity to try something else more to your liking.


Demonstrate the ability to get things done.


This is a quality that may be achieved by various means under different circumstances. Specific aspects will be elaborated in some of the succeeding paragraphs. It can probably be reduced, however, to a combination of three basic characteristics:

• initiative—the energy to start things and aggressiveness to keep them moving briskly,
• resourcefulness or ingenuity—the faculty for finding ways to accomplish the desired result, and
• persistence (tenacity)—the disposition to persevere in spite of difficulties, discouragement, or indifference.

This last quality is sometimes lacking in the make–up of otherwise brilliant people to such an extent that their effectiveness is greatly reduced. Such dilettantes are known as “good starters but poor finishers.” Or else it will be said: “You can’t take their type too seriously; they will be all steamed up over an idea today, but by tomorrow will have dropped it for some other wild notion.” Bear in mind, therefore, that it may be worthwhile finishing a job, if it has any merit, just for the sake of finishing it.


In carrying out a project, do not wait passively for anyone—suppliers, sales people, colleagues, supervisors—to make good on their delivery promises; go after them and keep relentlessly after them.


Many novices assume that it is sufficient to make a request or order, then sit back and wait until the goods or services are delivered. Most jobs progress in direct proportion to the amount of follow–up and expediting that is applied to them. Expediting means planning, investigating, promoting, and facilitating every step in the process. Cultivate the habit of looking immediately for some way around each obstacle encountered, some other recourse or expedient to keep the job rolling without losing momentum.

On the other hand, the matter is occasionally overdone by overzealous individuals who make themselves obnoxious and antagonize everyone with their incessant pestering. Be careful about demanding action from others. Too much insistence and agitation may result in more damage to one’s personal interest than could ever result from the miscarriage of the item involved.


Confirm your instructions and the other person’s commitments in writing.


Do not assume that the job will be done or the bargain kept just because someone agreed to do it. Many people have poor memories, others are too busy, and almost everyone will take the matter a great deal more seriously if it is in writing. Of course there are exceptions, but at times it pays to copy a third person as a witness.


When sent out on a business trip of any kind, prepare for it, execute the business to completion, and follow up after you return.

Any business trip, whether to review a design, resolve a complaint, analyze a problem, investigate a failure, call on a customer, visit a supplier, or attend a trade show, deserves your special attention to return the maximum benefit for the time and expense. Although each business trip will be unique, and the extent to which you must do the following will be different for each, as a minimum, be sure to:

• Plan the travel. This is more than just reserving transportation and hotels. Consider all eventualities such as lost luggage, missed connections, late arrivals, unusual traffic. Those you are meeting have arragend their schedules for you, so don’t disappoint them—arrive on time and be ready to perform. Follow the motto: “If you can’t be on time, be early!”

• Plan and prepare for the business to be done. Prepare and distribrute agendas before you arrive. Send ahead any material to be reviewed. Be sure everything (e.g., samples, prototypes, presentations) is complete. Practice any presentations, however minor they might seem, beforehand. In short, be fully prepared and allow those you visit to prepare fully.

• Complete the business at hand. You will not always be able to carry out a business trip to your complete satisfaction; others may control the outcome to a different conclusion. Nevertheless, if you have been sent out to complete a specific task, perhaps to analyze a failure or observe a product in use, and the allotted time proves inadequate for whatever reason, stay until the job is complete. Neither your supervisor nor those you visit will like it if someone else has to be sent out later to finish what you did not.

• Execute the appropriate follow–up. Often a seemingly successful trip will come to nothing without adequate follow–up. Use meeting minutes, trip reports, and further communications to your best advantage.

Basically, as a 50-year old professional, this book delivers little of what I have not already learned through trial and error.

This book allows you to learn without the scar tissue which I have accumulated from my "trial and error" travails.

Had someone come to me with this book when I was young -- when I intentionally continued to live in my world (by stealth) in order not to heed to the advice of my elders and continued to avoid their prophetic advice -- I would have been much better informed.

My recommenddation for AARP-card carrying members like myself, get a young'un to deliver this common sensical verse of advice at the young and restless person's door step (God forbid a gray-haired geezer be the deliverer of this book of truisms); and, then pray that the easily read words written therein somehow can be absorbed -- even if only partly. This book only offers good advice, so the more taken -- the more good is given.

Every College Graduate Should Buy This Book

I have been in business for over a decade and I live and breathe by many of the principles discussed in this book. I discovered these directives on my own through trial and error (mostly error) and from my numerous mentors. I certainly would have been better off if I had been exposed to this book as a graduate. The directives are quite simple but without them laid out in such simple terms and put into context most people would completely miss them. I will be purchasing this book for my kids their senior year of college.

Everything You Need To Know

I loved this little gem of a book. It gently reminds us how to be a better employee or employer, but I think this advice ultimately can help us be better in ALL of our relationships. Imagine if we let our ethics be our assett with our friends, neighbors and family, as well as our supervisors and co-workers. The title does not do this book justice, because it is not just the business community who needs these lessons. Whether you serve ice cream at a local shop, superivse small children at a day-care, teach in a classroom, or manage a multi-million dollar corporation, this book is all you need to guide you. Buy multiple copies and give it to college graduates and high-school students applying for their first job. If you are a high school guidance counselor, teach it to your students. If you are a boss, give it to your employees when they are hired (and read your own copy again and again!). If you are an employee, keep it on your desk and look at it from time to time to remind you to be your best. Thank you Mr. King and Mr. Skakoon for your timeless wisdom.
