Metaphysics, by Peter van Inwagen

This essential core text introduces readers to metaphysics. In thoughtful and engaging prose, Peter van Inwagen examines three profound questions: What are the most general features of the world? Why is there a world? And, what is the place of human beings in the world? The third edition includes an entirely new chapter on ontology. The new chapter presents a theory of the nature of being and proceeds to apply this theory to two problems of ontology: the problem of non-existent objects and the problem of universals. Equally valuable as a textbook in a university course or an introduction to metaphysical thinking for the interested layperson, Metaphysics remains a fascinating book for a wide range of readers, from first-time students to the most sophisticated philosophers.

Introductory, but not basic...
By ewomack
Metaphysics often plays the role of modern science's curmudgeonly grandfather. While the relatively young discipline of science gains more and more prestige by showing us more and more of what empirical reality consists of and making larger and larger claims about what science will show us ("The Mind of God" one popular physicist proclaimed), Metaphysics is the hoary old guru that tugs on science's collar and squacks, "Look here, sonny, settle down, we don't have all the answers." Whether this explains the claims of some scientists that metaphysics (or philosophy in general) is redundant and irrelevant, who knows. What is known is that Metaphysics, and philosophy in general, is a place for questions that don't yet have answers. This book provides an excellent introduction to the field of metaphysics, and by the end of the book the reader will have a very good idea of its basic (but indefinite) scope and the questions it asks.
The introduction to the book lays the groundwork for philosophical thought. The author warns the reader not to expect to come out of this reading with any new "information" in the way a physics or biology textbook would teach you something concrete and almost unquestionable. Metaphysics is all about questions that dangle on the head of a pin, and the logic and methodologies one uses to sway the question to one side or the other (or maybe both or neither). The introduction basically admits that metaphysics is not a science and one shouldn't expect scientific knowledge from its study. This chapter alone should be required reading for all new philosophy students (I could have used it at the beginning of my studies some years back - it would have saved me a lot of second guessing and frustration).
The book is basically a whirlwind tour of philosophy that incorporates metaphysical questions and historical arguments. The monism of Spinoza and monism in general are examined. Bishop Berkeley's view of the external world (or lack of it) is put to various arguments. Anti-Realism is considered by the author almost incomprehensible (this chapter is pretty interesting). The classic ontological and cosmological arguments are picked apart (the notion of 'possible worlds' is also introduced) and finally subjects concerning human beings themselves are discussed at length: are we physical or non-physical things? Do we have free will? What is rationality? Each subject is put to the test: the author presents both pros and cons of all the positions one can take on the views, but ultimately the author has a side that he's arguing for. He's not shy about it, either, but he does present all sides fairly, not just the ones he's arguing for. Sometimes it's difficult to tell where the author will come out. In some chapters he seems to be arguing overwhelmingly for one position, when he is in fact for the opposite. This will keep you on your mental toes.
One almost shocking thing about this book is that the author presents his beliefs to the reader before he tears into the arguments. This is pretty rare in philosophy texts, and is very admirable considering that these confessed beliefs do not seem to interfere with the logic or reasoning of his arguments. I found that move pretty gutsy.
If you have a philosophy degree, likely the information in this book will not be new. Nonetheless, it is true that a degree is in no way required for reading this book. It was meant to be, as Van Inwagen says in the preface, "...a book that the - I hope not mythical - 'interested general reader' can pick up and read without guidance from an instructor." This doesn't mean that it's an easy read, quite the opposite. Following the logic of the arguments in many places takes patience. If you're new to some of the concepts, letting them soak in will also take some time. Regardless, this is probably the best introduction to the subject of metaphysics currently out there. Too bad about the cover; it makes the book like a dry overly academic textbook, which it's not. Even if you're skeptical about the value of philosophy, this book will give you something to chew on. But don't expect light and lazy rainy afternoon reading.

An Excellent Introduction to the Subject
By S. Guha
I've now read van Inwagen's "Metaphysics" three times, cover to cover, and have more or less internalized the book. It is one of the best introductions to the subject, bar none; indeed, this is the book that first made me realize what metaphysics *is*. This book is suitable for the general reader, even if he has no previous background in philosophy, provided he is willing to think hard. It is equally suited to the beginning student of metaphysics. Van inwagen characterizes metaphysics, accurately in my opinion, as the study of ultimate reality. The metaphysician, in other words, is the inquirer who seeks to say exactly how the world really is. As such, the metaphysician cannot be content with anything less than the strict, literal, and precise truth about all things. The metaphysician's subject can be organized succinctly around three questions:
(1) What is the world really like? What are its most general features, and how is it organized? (2) Why is there a world at all? Why does the world have the general features and organization that it has? (3) What is our place in the world? How, if at all, do we fit into the scheme of things?
(These are paraphrases of questions that van Inwagen puts to the reader in the introduction of his book.)
The book can be seen as an introduction to metaphysical inquiry, by way of actual examples of how metaphysicians have attempted to answer these questions, and more specific questions that fall under them. Thus, van Inwagen examines, among other things, individuality (monism, nihilism, pluralism, Spinoza's & Bradley's arguments for monism), externality (Berkeley's subjective idealism), objectivity (Realism and anti-Realism), the cosmological, ontological, and teleological arguments, in several different forms, mind-body dualism and physicalism, free will vs. determinism, composition and persistence through time, and personal identity. In the course of this inquiry, van Inwagen makes no effort to maintain a fine neutrality; he forthrightly states his own opinions and argues for them, examines and criticizes opposing views and arguments, and offers his conclusions. On some matters, he finds no solutions, but only enduring mysteries. The book concludes with a meditation on mystery, and a suggestion that metaphysical problems may be beyond human power to solve (or resolve), and that it is no surprise if that is in fact the case. I happen to disagree with these sentiments, at least to a degree, and I certainly disagree with many of van Inwagen's conclusions. But that's the point. Learning metaphysics isn't learning a set of established facts, it is learning how to form something resembling an intelligent opinion on matters metaphysical. If, by the end of this book, you have learned enough to *disagree* with van Inwagen intelligently, the book has done its job. It certainly did for me.

breadth and depth from one of the finest
By Micah Newman
Peter van Inwagen writes here for the "hopefully non-mythical, general interested reader." This book is thus a guide to some broad topics in metaphysics written for someone with no philosophical background, but that is willing and able to think deeply. Of particular value is the introduction, wherein van Inwagen gives a characteristically cobweb-clearing explanation of just what metaphysics *is* (to a philosopher).

The topics (see the Table of Contents) cover pretty much the whole swath of metaphysics, and metaphysics is so wide- and far-reaching itself that each topic would be take several graduate courses to fully explore, just from a contemporary perspective. There is great breadth here, but also significant depth for the issues covered. Basically, for each topic van Inwagen introduces a main idea, then follows an argument to a conclusion (the one that he favors, naturally enough). But one also gets a strong sense of what other issues subside within, or are otherwise connected with, a topic. This book also serves as a terrific example of the author's general acumen for philosophical writing, in being able to navigate very clearly, lucidly, thoroughly, AND concisely through a chosen topic.

I just worry about this book's audience and whether it will reach a very large one. The thing is, it's written for an intelligent generalist and thus in the right tone for an introductory philosophy class, but also manifests perhaps more philosophical depth than your average non-philosophy-major undergraduate is prepared to tackle. I'd be very interested to know how often this ends up as a class text, though. It's also on just one topic, so for a general intro to phil. class it would have to be one book out of, say, three (the other two being in ethics and epistemology, naturally). The quality of this book, though, is such that that's how I'd be inclined to teach an intro class, if only to get as many facilely antirealist college students as possible to read the chapter on Objectivity.

On April 20, 1999, two boys went to their high school with bombs and guns. Their goal was to leave "a lasting impression on the world." The horror they inflicted left an indelible stamp on the American psyche.

Now in this definitive account, Dave Cullen presents a compelling and utterly human profile of teenage killers. With a keen investigative eye and psychological acumen, he draws on hundreds of interviews, thousands of pages of police files, FBI psychologists, and the boys' tapes and diaries. This close-up portrait of violence, a community rendered helpless, and police blunders and cover-ups is an unforgettable cautionary tale for our time. In the tradition of Helter Skelter and In Cold Blood, COLUMBINE is a revelatory work destined to be a classic.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In this remarkable account of the April 20, 1999, Columbine High School shooting, journalist Cullen not only dispels several of the prevailing myths about the event but tackles the hardest question of all: why did it happen? Drawing on extensive interviews, police reports and his own reporting, Cullen meticulously pieces together what happened when 18-year-old Eric Harris and 17-year-old Dylan Klebold killed 13 people before turning their guns on themselves. The media spin was that specific students, namely jocks, were targeted and that Dylan and Eric were members of the Trench Coat Mafia. According to Cullen, they lived apparently normal lives, but under the surface lay an angry, erratic depressive (Klebold) and a sadistic psychopath (Harris), together forming a combustible pair. They planned the massacre for a year, outlining their intentions for massive carnage in extensive journals and video diaries. Cullen expertly balances the psychological analysis—enhanced by several of the nation's leading experts on psychopathology—with an examination of the shooting's effects on survivors, victims' families and the Columbine community. Readers will come away from Cullen's unflinching account with a deeper understanding of what drove these boys to kill, even if the answers aren't easy to stomach. (Apr. 6)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Many reviewers were more concerned with coming to grips with the attack rather than assessing the book, but their concern may be a testament to Cullen’s work. His reporting fundamentally reframes the event: Columbine, he writes, should be thought of as a failed bombing rather than a school shooting. Furthermore, much of the conventional wisdom about how to prevent such attacks—essentially, watch out for pimply outcasts with a grudge—is confounded by an investigation into Harris’s and Klebold’s actual lives. Most critics, with Janet Maslin a notable exception, thought that Cullen’s account helps us to better wring meaning from the tragedy. In sum, Columbine “is an excellent work of media criticism, showing how legends become truths through continual citation” (New York Times Book Review).Copyright 2009 Bookmarks Publishing LLC

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Although much has been written about the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School, little of it has helped to explain why two high-school students went on a rampage, killing 13 people and wounding scores of others. Cullen, acclaimed expert on Columbine, offers a penetrating look at the motivation and intent of the shooters, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Drawing on interviews, police records, media coverage, and diaries and videotapes left behind by the shooters, Cullen examines the killers’ beliefs and psychological states of mind. Chilling journal entries show a progression from adolescent angst to psychopathic rage as they planned a multistage killing spree that included bombs that ultimately didn’t detonate. Cullen goes beyond detailing the planning and execution of the shootings, delving into the early lives of the killers as well. He explores the aftermath for the town of Littleton, Colorado: survivors’ stories, investigation into how the sheriff’s department mishandled the crisis, several ongoing legal issues, exploitation of the shooting by some religious groups and sensationalists, and the school’s battle to regain its identity. Cullen debunks several Columbine myths, including the goth angle and a martyrdom story of a girl who proclaimed her belief in God before she was killed. Graphic and emotionally vivid; spectacularly researched and analyzed. --Vanessa Bush

Columbine
By Kdragonrose21
If you want straightforward, factual information on the murders at Columbine High School, this is the book you want to read. It presents the facts and debunks many of the myths, but it also explains where the myths and misconceptions originated from. A lot of reviewers of this book disliked the way Cullen told the story by going back and forth between the day of the killings and the events leading up to April 20, 1999, but I thought it was a unique way to present the information. A lot of books written about events such as this tend to lead with all the background information and it can cause the reader to get bored. By weaving the background within the story of the killings, it kept me engaged in the story. This book also tackled the Cassie Bernall/Valeen Schnurr mix-up in a way that clarifies what happened without degrading Cassie Bernall, her family or those who still consider Cassie Bernall a martyr. This book also devotes a lot of effort into understanding the thought processes of both Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Many other accounts I've read simply label Harris as a psychopath and Klebold as a "follower" or "sidekick" This book has more insight on Harris and Klebold than any other account I've read. It also explores the law enforcement cover-up of their knowledge about Eric Harris's bomb experimentation and his history of violent threats. A must-read for anyone looking to know the truth about what happened and to understand what can be done to prevent these attacks in the future.

Groundbreaking

Incredibly thorough investigation of the Columbine High School massacre and factors surrounding it on all sides. Dave Cullen does a phenomenal job at deconstructing the inaccurate narrative that most of us still hold about the event, and provides a platform for the victims' stories to be heard as well. We need critical, thoughtful explorations like this book if we are to truly learn from horrific events like Columbine.

The BEST research on this subject ever done...
By L. Vandeveer
A good read for those trying to understand what happened. It is VERY WELL researched and gives insight into the boys' parents, for whom I feel nothing but deep sorrow. Psychopaths are difficult for even professionals to recognize, let alone the poor parent dealing with one. Most people will have difficulty understanding a true psychopath unless they have actually dealt with one personally, and so tend to think poor parenting was involved, instead of realizing these children are just wired wrong from the get-go. It would be a wonderful day if/when the DSM finally recognized these people are mentally ill, which it currently doesn't. There's really no treatment that works for a psychopath, and yet they are not considered insane. Really, our definition of "sanity" should be redefined, enabling the healing arts to properly label these people and give the legal system a way to deal with them: Incarcerate them for life in order to protect the rest of us who are being victimized.

Dub: Soundscapes and Shattered Songs in Jamaican Reggae (Music/Culture), by Michael Veal

When Jamaican recording engineers Osbourne “King Tubby” Ruddock, Errol Thompson, and Lee “Scratch” Perry began crafting “dub” music in the early 1970s, they were initiating a musical revolution that continues to have worldwide influence. Dub is a sub-genre of Jamaican reggae that flourished during reggae’s “golden age” of the late 1960s through the early 1980s. Dub involves remixing existing recordings—electronically improvising sound effects and altering vocal tracks—to create its unique sound. Just as hip-hop turned phonograph turntables into musical instruments, dub turned the mixing and sound processing technologies of the recording studio into instruments of composition and real-time improvisation. In addition to chronicling dub’s development and offering the first thorough analysis of the music itself, author Michael Veal examines dub’s social significance in Jamaican culture. He further explores the “dub revolution” that has crossed musical and cultural boundaries for over thirty years, influencing a wide variety of musical genres around the globe.

From Booklist
Veal chronicles how dub music progressed from remixing and altering existing reggae recordings to studio-creating original songs out of music samples, noise, and found sounds. Inventing and developing techniques with effects similar to what turntable scratching and sampling later achieved, Osbourne "King Tubby" Ruddock, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and others paved the way for rap by placing the boasting of "toasters" over bass-heavy charts and fractured soundscapes. Veal traces the development of the drum-and-bass sound central to reggae and dub, noting that "sonically and aesthetically, musicians like DJ Kool Herc," often called the progenitor of rap, "essentially transplanted the Jamaican sound system model" to the Bronx, where it was finally distilled into rap. Drawing on interviews with dub pioneers DJ and producer-recording artist Mikey Dread, Veal posits that dub and hip-hop are "deconstructive compositional strategies" that sensitize "listeners to the microaesthetics of production." Yow! Persuasive if weighty stuff that draws a line of musical development from the studios of Kingston to the bling-encrusted world of hip-hop--and it has a killer discography. Mike Tribby

Review
"Veal has written the first comprehensive overview of (dub's) development up to and including the digital music that followed dub's analog innovations... Veal does an excellent job of explaining, analyzing, and describing sounds. He also connects dub's influence to hip-hop, dance, electronica, and other modern genres, demonstrating how many dub tricks are still being used today in various incarnations. Readers will especially appreciate Veal's excellent Appendix of Recommended Listening, which includes catalog numbers that will make these recordings easier to find... (T)his is certainly the best and only book on dub music; highly recommended for all academic and public music collections where reggae music is popular." —Library Journal

“Veal deftly outlines the sociopolitical context in which dub arose, and explains how the cut-corner, make-do economics of the Jamaican record business led to a maximization of materials: song begat deejay version(s) beget dub(s)-at least three products for little more than the price of one... Where Veal's book steals a march on the competition is in his technical analysis of how Tubby, Perry, Thompson, Sylvan Morris, and other mixing engineers adapted (and creatively abused) the equipment in studios... He also analyzes a number of tracks by each of the principal dub engineers under discussion...to show the transformation of song to version and dub, all of which is illuminating...(H)e provides valuable information as to where these tracks may be found... (T)his is an extremely bold and interesting book.”—The Wire

Review
“This extraordinary book, with its rich interpretation of the aesthetics and social significance of dub, constitutes a dramatically original contribution to the study of Jamaican popular music, and should be a landmark in popular music studies as a whole.” (Peter Manuel, professor of ethnomusicology, John Jay College and CUNY Graduate Center)

“Veal’s wise volume has rescued Reggae music at last from the tentacles of exoticism. This is a glorious affirmation of dub’s rebel, Creole spirit.” (Paul Gilroy, Anthony Giddens professor of social theory, London School of Economics)

Droppin' Science
By Francois Kevorkian
While there may be some readers grumbling about the author's 'dryness' in this volume, I found it to be a unique and invaluable resource in bringing out many heretofore unknown details of dub production techniques from some of its most revered protagonists.

This book authoritatively helps frame Dub in the greater context of Jamaica's musical and cultural landscape in the second half of the twentieth century, with unique innovations which some would argue has had an immense but vastly under-appreciated impact on the rest of the planet's musical development up to this very moment. The author has managed to provide studio rats such as myself with the luxurious wealth of information that -short of being having been there- some of us had been looking for since first hearing some of these recordings more than a quarter of a century ago, and as such is an invaluable addition to any dub creator's tolbox.

The minute and precise details in which some of this is recounted is a unique asset in helping preserve what has up to now been nothing but soon-to-be-gone and more often than not distorted oral tradition, and its many direct quotes from those key players still alive today will make it a solid historical reference point for those planning to further study this subject for years to come!

It is also welcome and refreshing to read such an account from the writer's African-American perspective, as it brings up many crucial facets of Jamaican music and culture into a sorely needed focus, which up to now has been the province of either ethnomusicologists who for the most part somewhat missed the point, or enthusiasts without the necessary research background and clarity of expression to bring it all together.

There are very few books that arguably helped change one's life. In my case, this is most definitely one of them. It comes with my highest recommendation.

Imaginative Work on a Revolutionary Musical Form
By Anonymous
A book like this is long overdue. The simple fact that it was published makes it good. Of the two most important strains of contemporary black music, hip-hop has generated thousands of books and articles, but dub has been largely ignored by the ethno-musicological world.

Dub - Soundscapes And Shattered Songs In Jamaican Reggae by Yale ethnomusicologist Michael E. Veal, is a scholarly work, but don't let that scare you. I know some of you might dislike the book because of its somewhat academic tone, scoff at many of its themes and find them pretentious, but I strongly disagree. This is a terrific analysis. Prof. Veal examines dub in a variety of contexts not only as an expression of Afro-Caribbean culture and the Jamaican music business but as an art form and creative process comparable to just about every modern, futurist and post-modern movement from dada and surrealism to conceptual art, from Luigi Russolo and John Cage to its influence on hip-hop and worldwide dance-pop culture.

It's not all dry, academic stuff. The man knows, and more importantly, loves his dub music. First, Prof. Veal shows us his dub credentials by going into detail about Jamaican music. But instead of the more familiar reggae legends about impoverished young ghetto singers and gun-toting producers, Veal's emphasis here is on recording studios, audio equipment, and the engineers themselves. After all, dub mixed at the various studios sounded the way it did because of the improvised, often homemade technology the early reggae engineers used. Syd Bucknor, Sylvan Morris, Graeme Goodall and Byron Smith are all mentioned, moving on to Tubby, Errol ET Thompson at Randy's, Channel One etc. There's a lot of interesting information about how JA studios developed during the late 60s and 70s.

Veal also compares dub with rock psychedelia and the use of ganja, but also notes that many of the most famous dub originators didn't smoke (Tubby and ET, for example) and while some reggae figures insist dub is not "ganja" music, others insist it most certainly is. Dub can be seen as similar to psychedelia's liberation from sonic slavery, but it seems unlikely that Jamaican engineers were listening to Pink Floyd's Ummagumma. On the other hand, a certain amount of psychedelia's production techniques like echo/delay and phase shifting made their way into some American R&B and Soul records of the late 60's and early 70's, which have some rather proto-dubby-sounding parts. These records would've been familiar to Jamaican musicians at the same time dub began to appear, and are likely to have influenced them.

Prof. Veal conducted dozens of recent interviews with various figures connected with dub's 70's heyday. "Fortunate survivors" would perhaps be a more accurate way of describing them, given the all too common murders and early deaths which are a tragic fact of life in JA. The dark, moody and aggressive nature of much dub is also considered as a reflection of the crime and violence in Kingston's ghettoes. These interviews contain a wealth of comments which help shed new light on the development of dub. Sadly, the fact that a book on dub has taken 30 years to appear means that King Tubby and several others aren't around to offer their comments

Then, he takes us through a few carefully analyzed mixes by various engineers. It's good to see others besides Tubby and Scratch getting their due credit. Here, Prof. Veal shows us he really listens to this stuff like a truly obsessed fan. Starting with some late 60's Studio One productions, he describes the recordings in great detail, noting the peculiarities of the mixes, instrument placement, sound quality and tape hiss. He describes how the mixes were done based on his interviews with the engineers, what key the tunes were played in, how echoed/delayed chords and vocals create strange rhythmic and harmonic juxtapositions, even noting the echo/delay rates used, the qualities of various types of reverb equipment, and how the signal path through the mixing board created certain sounds. There's a lot of interesting comments by the engineers; Jammy says his best mix ever was "Jammy's A Shine", his powerful, mind-blowing dub of Ronnie Davis' cover of the Wailer's "Sun Is Shining" produced by Bunny Lee around 1977-78. "That record mash up Jamaica and England and Europe and them places completely!" says Jammy.

Professor Veal explores the concept of dub as a process rather than product, which transforms the "truth" and "reality" of a normal reggae tune, its sounds unfolding and being turned inside out in the mix, causing the listener to question the authority of their preconceived notions. This was similar to the goal of dada/surrealism (to take one example) and thus dub can be considered to be part of the 20th century's avant-garde tradition. Many of the themes have been briefly discussed by music critics in the pages of The Wire and the liner notes to the Macro Dub Infection compilations for instance, but Veal devotes 300 plus pages to it, and expands on dozens of the same thoughts and feelings about dub as I (and others) have had for these last 25 years. Slavery and colonialism, the Afro-futurist sonic sci-fi of Sun Ra and Lee Perry, class and race issues, technology and information, all get name checked. The fact that Veal's themes are sprawling yet coherent demonstrates the importance of this music.

I've always felt it is probably one of the most revolutionary developments in late 20th century "pop", and Veal also touches on this line of reasoning. Dub radically subverts traditional structures of harmony, rhythm and composition. Dub disrespectfully ignores the notion that every recording of a musical performance is sacred and must not be technologically tampered with because it destroys the integrity and authenticity of the musicians' "artistic expression" as caught on tape. The implications of this subverts the idea that a piece of music (or any art) is "complete" in only one, final form, as intended by its "creator", and ignores ownership and copyright issues. Thus it can be compared to such figures such as Cage, Stockhausen, Warhol, Duchamp, Derrida, Deleuze and Guatarri, post-structuralism and deconstructionism (etc bla bla bla). Dub wallows in gimmicky, anti-musical sound, using echo, fade-ins and outs and other sound effects in totally inappropriate ways which an "authentic" "serious" musician would find absolutely appalling. It not only re-mixes, but it re-thinks, ignores, or gleefully violates practically every rule in the book. The same things were said about bebop back in the 40's, but ironically it is often the jazz purists who loathe musical developments like dub and hip-hop. Like the use of sampling, dub's entire assault on musical convention infuriates traditional, conservative musicians, and on balance, this is certainly a good thing. That's what makes dub so innovative and important, and of course so much fun.

These days, when there are so many people creating what Adrian Sherwood calls "designer dub" - a reggae composition intended to be "dubby" from the start, Veal reminds us that "dub" cannot really exist without a "vocal" version to compare it with - dub is a process of transformation. That's what makes dub so powerful. It's far more dramatic when you hear the vocal followed by the dub (or perhaps vice-versa). A "dub" tune by itself may sound good on its own terms, but it will be far more thrilling when heard in contrast to its traditionally-mixed vocal cut. Obviously, the 12" and "showcase" LP are the ideal formats for this.

I'm really impressed with this book, and it's about time someone from the academic world gave dub some serious consideration as a major, influential musical art form.

Great resource for musicians, producers and students of popular culture
By F. M. Coleman
This is a book written by an academic, but it has applications for anyone interested in this kind of music. After covering the development of modern Jamaican music from independence in 1962 on, he devotes a lot of space to analysis of the different recording strategies used by most of the well-known originators of dub and breaks down individual tracks in some detail, even detailing the specific equipment used by many producers. As someone who records and mixes my own music I found this kind of information really useful and inspiring and it has already caused me to question some of my own creative strategies and techniques. The second half of the book looks at the music in its political and historical context and follows the influences of dub in modern music. A book like this has long been called for. I remember the frustration of talking to young DJs who were all about 'dub' but actually didn't even know the music had originated in Jamaica. Dub was an extraordinary moment in modern music and deserves the seriousness of this treatment. One presumes that had this music originated in Europe they would be devoting university courses to it. Some readers may find the second half of the book a bit dense, but I loved all of it.

Drinking Molotov Cocktails with Gandhi, by Mark Boyle

More than ever, people are longing for deep and meaningful change. Another world is not only possible; it is essential. Yet despite our creative and determined efforts to attain social justice and ecological sustainability, our global crises continue to deepen.

In Drinking Molotov Cocktails with Gandhi, best-selling author Mark Boyle argues that our political and economic system has brought us to the brink of climate catastrophe, ransacking ecosystems and unraveling communities for the benefit of the few at the expense of the many. He makes a compelling case that we must "rewild" the political landscape, as history teaches us that positive social change has always been wrought by movements prepared to use any means available.

The time has come for pacifists, revolutionaries, and freedom fighters to work together for the creation of a world worth sustaining. Eloquent, visionary, and beautifully written, this incendiary manifesto strikes at the heart of the world’s crises and reframes our understanding of how to solve them, signaling a turning point in our journey towards an ecologically just society.

The three R’s of the climate change generation—reduce, reuse, and recycle—are long overdue for an upgrade .Welcome to resist, revolt, rewild.

Mark Boyle is the author of The Moneyless Man and The Moneyless Manifesto. He lived completely without money for three years, and is a director of the global sharing community streetbank.com.

Review
Rare indeed is the book that has a fierceness and intelligence that matches the urgency of our environmental situation, but Mark Boyle has written just such a book. It is a wildly important book, a powerful and profound book. Thank you for writing it.
—Derrick Jensen, coauthor, Deep Green Resistance, and author, Endgame and A Language Older than Words

Each of Mark Boyle’s books has inspired me to dive deeper into myself than ever before. With the knowledge he shares in his writing I have had no choice but to make great changes in my life to live out my beliefs. Drinking Molotov Cocktails with Gandhi was the toughest of his books to swallow, but the most necessary in realizing what must be done to live on a truly sustainable and just planet. There is no hiding from the truth after reading this book.
—Rob Greenfield, author, Dude Making a Difference

Violence is so common in our culture we take it for granted; it’s background noise in our busy lives. Most alive today have not known a world not at war, nor a neighbor untouched by assault, theft or abuse. And yet, we know of cultures in antiquity that went one thousand years without war. We are not biologically different than those peoples. What are we doing differently that makes us so violent? Can we change? Mark Boyle says if we want to exchange a suicidal trajectory for something bringing us grace, harmony and joy – at peace with our planet – we need to answer that. He does, with style.
—Albert Bates, author, The Post Petroleum Survival Guide and Cookbook and The Biochar Solution

There are two books that have shifted my world entirely: Naomi Klein’s This Changes Everything and Mark Boyle’s Drinking Molotov Cocktails with Gandhi – and of the two, Boyle’s is by far the most affecting. If you care about the planet, about our place on it, about the devastation that is modern western living, you have to read this book. Read it, think on it, act on it. Only by each of us doing this, can we hope to be the change we need to see in the world. It’s terrifying. But it’s the truth.
—Manda Scott, author, Boudica and Rome

Mark Boyle’s book throws down the gauntlet at the feet of the world as we know it. His challenge to the complicity of all of us – even those of us who work for change and against injustice – in a system that is destroying the planet and most of its species will trouble many. So too will his endorsement of violent methods of resistance alongside the more accepted nonviolent ones. But he asks questions that need answering at every turn – and his call for the climate change generation to replace “reduce, reuse, recycle” with “resist, revolt, rewild” strikes a nerve.
—Chris Brazier, New Internationalist

In a time of quiescence and fossilised orthodoxies, what we need most is honesty about the human predicament. In this thought-provoking book, Mark Boyle challenges us to explore the dark corners we’d all rather look away from.
—Paul Kingsnorth, author, The Wake and cofounder, Dark Mountain Project

Mark’s new work lays bare and dissects the violence that lies behind the comforts of our industrialized society. He asks some very hard questions of the environmental and social change movements, which we will all need to address if we are to create true social justice and restore the wider web of life.
—Graham Burnett, author, Permaculture: A Beginners Guide and The Vegan Book of Permaculture

Mark Boyle’s book is a mind opener, a must for those that want to see there is still a great deal we can do, it’s not all lost,

Drinking molotov cocktails with Gandhi by Mark Boyle
A review by Lorenzo costa
I met Mark in London in September, we spoke a lot and had a great connection. He gave me his last book and I promised to review it. Time past, and I have just finished the book. It took me time to finish it and this is because this book is not an easy read. I started out swiftly and slowly started halting on some pages, first one, then two, three, I started turning the corners of the pages as reminders, and in the end they were nearly all turned. The concepts Mark shares are so dense they set you thinking and you can’t just dismiss the ideas and insights he shares with a light mind. Every chapter takes the reader in a journey to discover the mess our world is, made up of false views and explanations. He takes the reader down a path that leads to a very interesting ending/starting point. End of the path, start of reshaping of our minds and practices.
Mark describes our world in a clear and raw way without a medium, but every time it is not only a deconstruction of our world, but a reconstruction. Mark builds our strength in interpreting the reality we live in, sharing paths of solution.
The whole book tends to the concept of rewilding earth, and rewilding man. To explain this concept he uses the example of the introduction of the grey wolf in Yellowstone national park. When I heard this story recalled by Mark in London at a public speech, many I think didn’t understand what the strength of the idea was. Many associated the wolf with us and saw the predator instinct we supposedly share. I have come to a conclusion on this point. When Mark speaks of rewilding earth and us, he’s not speaking of feral instincts he’s speaking of feeling, connection, and balance.
The introduction of the grey wolf in Yellowstone wasn’t useful for the fact they introduced a top predator, it was useful for the fact it took back balance to the system. Rewilding ourselves is not putting us in a top spot it’s introducing us back to where we belong: earth, the global ecosystem, nature. Rewilding is about building balance in ourselves and our lives. It is about connecting to our inner-self and outer-self. We have grown up to be imbalanced and are transferring that imbalance to the rest of the planet, from centuries in the so called first world. Only if we shift back to connecting and not simply using, will our presence here be of some use to the rest of nature.
Mark Boyle’s book is a mind opener, a must for those that want to see there is still a great deal we can do, it’s not all lost, but we have to open our eyes now, and rewild!

With the knowledge he shares in his writing I have had no choice but to make great changes in my life to live out my beliefs
By Rob Greenfield
Each of Mark Boyle’s books has inspired me to dive deeper into myself than ever before. With the knowledge he shares in his writing I have had no choice but to make great changes in my life to live out my beliefs. Drinking Molotov Cocktails with Gandhi was the toughest of his books to swallow, but the most necessary in realizing what must be done to live on a truly sustainable and just planet. There is no hiding from the truth after reading this book.

Drupal and Design Advice for designers
By harris901
There are really two different books going on here. The first could be titled something like
"Advice for Independent Web Designers". The other is "Drupal for Designers". Advice for Desgners
includes helpful material about UX, workflow, and interacting with customers. Having worked as
an independent consultant for twenty years, I found this material to be relavant and interesting.
There is a lot of good sound advice here. It just doesn't have much to do with Drupal.

The Drupal half of the book provides a good starting point, but in many areas left me wanting
more. I appreciated the chapters on Drush, Git, and LESS. I found the discussion of grid layouts
helpful. There is a reasonable introduction to content types and the basic structure of a Drupal site.
The case study and views example were interesting. The chapter on themes provide some helpful suggestions
on choosing a base theme and how to setup a sub-theme but didn't tell me what to do next. Drupal
is handled at a pretty high level here. We create some content, create some views, and add some modules.
The lowest we go is a bit of CSS. Anything involving PHP is a call to your nearest developer.

This is a interesting call. I enjoyed the book, I'm glad I read it still I have to give it a
pretty so-so rating. There is not enough Drupal content here for me. Let me qualify that by saying
I am a developer not a designer. The book is going to be a better read for a designer who wants
an introduction to Drupal along with lots of advice about web design practices and workflow.

Great concept....would've liked to have seen more theming examples
By Adam Bell "Web Design Rock Star"
Drupal is a real difficult Content Management System to master. And I'm more on the creative side of the fence. So when I learned a book like this was about to come out, I rushed to get a copy. It's a great book. Especially when learning about new things to me like Drush and Git. However, I really was hoping for more theming examples. Instead of just giving us a bunch of base themes to consider, I didn't really get any nuances of how to actually take a theme and tweak the CSS or even the underlying HTML. He also writes about how to deal with clients. While that's very important, this isn't really the right book for it. I just want to learn Drupal. Not how to write a proposal. I know how to do that.

So it's the right idea. Wrong execution. I'm hoping someone will come along with an even better version of this concept down the road.

Superb Resource
By J. Hoyer
There is a huge void of book resources for the designer interested in learning Drupal in conjunction with Fireworks. Many places share little bits and pieces but these fail to clarify Drupal processes and starting points.

Thankfully, this solid and friendly book eases Drupal using a very sensible, simplified approach.

Unlike most technical manuals, Drupal for Designers is a refreshing pleasure to read with a personal voice, loads of useful diagrams, nice typography and comfortable white space. As a newbie, I especially appreciate the specific grid recommendations as well as the interesting interviews with field experts. At this point I am referencing mostly this excellent book, sometimes alongside The Definitive Guide to Drupal (comprehensive resource for more intermediate/advanced Drupal). Thank you Dani Nordin and O'Reillyl!

Very disappointed.
By P. Whittier
I don't usually write reviews, but I am for this book because it was a waste of money and I don't want you to waste yours. Unless you know nothing about beauty and health, it doesn't tell you anything you don't already know. Either she isn't telling the truth or she just has amazing genes (she didn't even have menopausal symptoms). You can't maintain a decent weight and look like she does if you don't strictly watch your everything you eat and workout very hard or have exceptional genes. At least she admits to having some cosmetic procedures in small amounts but what about sharing EXACTLY what you do for exercise? I'm not sure why celebrities aren't willing to go into more details about what they do. At 47, in order to maintain a good weight, I work out five to six days a week for an hour or more doing weight training and cardio, counting calories and measuring everything I put into my mouth, not eating at restaurants, having desserts or processed foods, and I still couldn't be a fitness model. I don't know why they can't tell us that they work out 2 hours a day or do two workouts a day, etc.? I also think she was just trying to push her own skincare line too and some of the cosmetics she recommends aren't even available in the United States. I'll sum up the book for you from what I remember: exercise, eat healthy and wholesome foods (possibly think about becoming some type of vegetarian), but don't deprive yourself, drink lots of water, use hair extensions or Rogaine for thinning hair, don't tan, use self tanner and sunscreen.

Don't bother.
By Muriel S.
Save your money, ladies! I preordered this book with anticipation, which shortly became disappointment. Beautiful pictures of Christie throughout, and some good vegan recipes and some exercise tips. But the rest was all CHRISTIE. Stuff Christie uses, Christie's colors, Christie's fav clothes, and so forth and so on. There's few makeup and other general guidelines for people who aren't exactly like Christie...and frankly, who is?!

Rigged Comments...
By A Reader's Reader
Warning -- there are rigged comments from "mystery people."
I read Ms. Brinkley's book, and thought it was pretty good. (Although not as good as I had hoped.) I wrote (what I considered) an exceedingly fair and perhaps overly generous review.
Now I am getting snark on my review from her "friends" or someone in her camp. (Publicist? Friends? Her?) As well as two identical comments (punctuation and everything) under two different male names. (One of which has since been deleted. I mean -- why would a guy be reading a book about women's health and beauty, anyway?)
Frankly, I expect more of Ms. Brinkley. She always seemed like a decent person.
Just warning you.
