I had to keep reading

The Burning Bride takes place in modern day India. The central story revolves around an archaic practice known as the dowry.

A dowry is given by the bride's family in the form of money or gifts to the groom as part of the marriage contract. Although the giving and receiving of a dowry has been illegal for decades, it is a deeply ingrained custom in a culture that is millennia old.

Uma marries into a family who doesn't possess the sense of honor most Indians have. They extort money from her parents and when the money is gone, the bride is considered of no more use. That is when the death threats begin.

One element of the story that really impressed me was it's multi-character cast. The author did a wonderful job of creating numerous, yet distinct and believable characters. The author also forces the reader to connect with them, pulling out an array of emotions.

Although there are many characters and subplots, the author manages to keep the reader's attention with the plot's quick pacing and easy to read style. Yet, they never glossed over pertinent information to achieve this effect.

Overall, The Burning Bride is a compelling and gripping novel. I had to keep reading, needing to know what was going to happen to the protagonist. Yet, at the same time, I was caught up in the history, culture and story of the moment. Need I say more?

Fascinating story, highly recommended!

The Burning Bride is the story of Uma, a young woman, whose life changes when she marries Vijay. Uma’s family have already given Madhu, her mother-in-law, a dowry (the payment that the bride’s family make to the groom’s family for the wedding). But when Uma moves in with Madhu, Vijay and their family, Madhu increases the pressure on Uma and her parents for further dowry payments.

The story, released on International Women’s Day, is told from the point of view of nine different women, including Uma and Madhu. It provides a fascinating insight into the practice of dowry which is, amazingly, regularly still expected despite being made illegal many years ago. Without wanting to give away too many spoilers, the book covers a range of controversial issues including violence towards women. The fact that it is told from the perspectives of both the victim and the perpetrator gives this book its strength. As Uma’s life becomes increasingly difficult, it is interesting to see how the other characters rationalise their behaviour in their own minds. The dynamics of the relationship between Uma and her mother-in-law, Madhu, are particularly compelling.

The Burning Bride is a thought provoking, absorbing read, with a real focus on character development. I really loved Part V, it was the perfect ending. Highly recommended.

Affected me deeply. Had me crying.

Very Compelling read. I was deeply affected by the story -how the dowry system is destroying women's lives and is still widespread in spite of being illegal. Uma's story had me crying in parts. Her dreams of a happy,married life are not fulfilled as the torture starts and continues by the mother in law demanding more and more dowry.The author has skilfully woven all the characters to make an excellent read. One day I started reading in bed at 11p.m. and when I next looked at the clock it was 2 a.m. -I had been so engrossed in the story.
I have now bought the paper copy and am going to re-read it.
Highly recommended. !

Bloody awful. Poor grammar, false bravado, BAD advice for anyone who wants a relationship.

There is a difference between being a Domme and being an abuser. Treating someone with zero respect and declaring that "in the end, it's only fair" is all about abuse. If you hate a man this much, just break it off and move on.

When I Grow Up… (volume 1) by Patricia Asedegbega is absolutely enchanting. The characters are funny, smart, and believable. I was hooked immediately by this intriguing mystery. The plot is fast-paced and keeps readers guessing what will become of the characters’ jobs as well as their friendships. Patricia Asedegbega has brilliantly spun together a novel that will instantly lure readers in and keep them reading until they finish the book. A novel that features the Spanish culture as well as family, loyalty, and the desire to find the truth. When I Grow Up is a story that can be read by teens and adults. The ups and downs fo each character inside this novel, is captivating. I could hardly believe how everything was perfectly wrapped up and tied in together. The ending was super good and will leave readers feeling happy.

Inside of Patricia Asedegbega’s novel, When I Grow Up…, is a sweet and mysterious read. A book that shows readers one woman’s determination to help her friends when they are in need. Alicia at first feel awful around her boss and as the plot unfolds something between them has broken and her fear of her boss is gone. It’s like her boss became a totally new person with Alicia’s help. Then there’s the case of a friend being framed for a company crime that he hasn’t committed…Alicia knows it and she sets out like Nancy Drew and rushes to save the day…only can she? Readers will fall in love with this first volume by Patricia Asedegbega’s series. I highly recommend this delightful yet suspenseful novel to readers everywhere. I can’t wait to read the next book in this amazing series. When I Grow Up…is definitely a novel readers don’t want to miss.

Great book, saw the play and wanted my family to read it.

INSPIRING

I read this book in the late 1960's and kept it on my bookshelf as a treasured item ever sense, until in 1996 when I lent it to a Sociology Professor and it was stolen -- along with his car. Because this book had such a profound effect on me when I read it, it remand on my bookshelf as a constant reminder of the inequalities of life. The Me nobody Knows was also a tool that motivated me, a young NYC girl living in the same surroundings that these young writes explained in their works, to forge ahead and create a better life for myself. [...] how can [anyone] so naively suggest that these people, of which I am one are "weaker Humans." Do you assume that socioeconomic standing endows one with strength. I find myself surrounded now with people who have been given more opportunities in life afforded to them by money, class and status, and yet many of them dwindel it away by becoming selfish and myoptic in their views of others. Those in unfortunate situations such as poverty do not choose that life and are often swallowed up by it like a quicksand that allows your head to stay afloat but maintains a hold on the rest of you. Another book that follows in this idea of the struggles of children growing up in poverty is Down These Mean Streets by Piri Thomas of which I suggest to readers who found The Me Nobody Knows enlightening.

This book made me realize never to take anything for granted

I read this book in high school, almost 13 years ago, when it first came out. I have never forgotten it, I also saw the play and listened to the record. I had such an outpouring of feelings for the students. I grew up in a high middle to upper class area and I will never take anything I have for granted again. This book makes you sad and happy and discouraged and uplifted all in one sentence. This book makes you stop and think about how unfair life can be, with out boundrys on children or weaker humans, even the strong are kicked when down. I loved the "If I had a million dollars" section I couldn't believe some of the things the children came up with. I was also impressed with the way the author left the editing alone. The child wrote it that way so it stayed that way. Very good book.

Hmmmm...MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!

I did not like it. Every other chapter was him sleeping with another girl or wanting to OR it was her apologizing. They were not a couple but were bickering children. He did not want to forgive her for her big reveal and was mad that she slept with Max but he basically hooked up with every female in town while she was gone and kept his confrontation with her father a secret. He was hypocritical and a jack butt. I did not like him one bit but I did adore Max and really wished she ended up with him. He would never have treated her the way Luke did. Luke slept with a girl because Maggie took Max's phone call in front of him. Luke then came home the next day and gloated about it to Maggie as "payback". I HATED him. He had NO redeeming qualities. The reader also had to read about that hook up and how great the sex with this girl was. Then at the end after Maggie's big reveal and after Luke gets all mad and goes off, he considers hooking up with another girl. He spent the ENTIRE book wanting her back, then he sleeps with that one girl, then he wants Maggie back, then after he has her, he goes off on a 3 week break and wants another girl. I would NEVER trust him. At least Maggie was in a relationship when she had sex with Max and had only been with him a few times at that and never thought of another guy after she got with Luke again. He was NOT worth the dirt on her shoes and if I was her brother, I would never let him be with her. How can her twin brother watch his friend sleep with random woman after random woman for 2 years and still want him for his sister??? What a bunch of stupid idiots!!!! I am so mad that I spent my last bit of my "book allowance" on this story!!!

Love the effing cover!!! Jeremy he's a good brother, "Maggie, there is no effing way you're staying here in New York, let alone working in a goddamned strip joint." Luke after years you can tell her still hardcore for his girl, "I stayed up the rest of the night planning my mode of attack to win her back, worrying she might leave, or worse, stay with Max, and I'd never get my girl again." He's real persistent as well, "go ahead, baby. Keep running, but I'll never change my mind about you. It's a waste of time to try. Cause this isn't over." I loved this book losing your first love, finding it again, going through s*** to get back to where you were it's like a fairytale!

I absolutely adored this book! Stay by Kelly Mooney was my first read by this easy to love author, because she knows how to deliver a beautiful, raw and emotional love story, one that left me lusting for more, still prying to keep the door from closing as I couldn’t leave her characters. Maggie and Luke were perfect together, being her brother’s best friend they shared an attraction and bond that made their relationship impossible to resist. Luke was so sweet, sexy, and adorable. He really made up for what Mags went through with her parents, who were forever absent from her life, favouring her twin brother Jeremy and supporting his needs, whilst Maggie’s dreams were suppressed constantly neglected, she was a strong and thoughtful girl towards other people’s needs when her own accomplishments never saw the limelight, stuck in second place, she would pick herself back up again, and look at new ways to reach her goals. Mags was definitely a girl who suffered from emotional and physical scars, the fact that she had Jeremy, Luke and Dean around to make her smile made the pain tolerable and hidden, but when her future alters and fearing the impact on her loved ones, not wanting to jeopardise their future, she decided to run leaving her dream man behind with confessions and Luke a broken man. I really felt for Mags as she tried to find peace and acceptance with her new life, and Max was the perfect guy who made her confront her demons. Now Luke, god I just loved him lol, the guy was romantic, sexy and unrelenting to get her back because she was always going to be his. Kelly Mooney really brought tears to my eyes reading his pov, my heart ached to console him as he fell deeper into a dark hole, unable to exist and relied on woman, drink and pills to numb thoughts of his loss. Now he did make my bad list when he played around and acted immature, because he couldn’t handle seeing Mags with Max, I know he was hurting and that he still struggled to overcome his pain relief to deal, but his behaviour and sexual antics kind of tainted what he shared with Mags and his appeal slightly slipped, I hated reading it because I loved his character and I wanted him to stay perfect in my eyes, good thing he did know how to redeem himself and that’s why he’s book boyfriend material for me, we all make mistakes right? This was a romantic read which I loved, drawing me into a world of heartache, loss, inner strength and second chance love as Luke Matthews fought to get his dream girl and his life back on track.
